Ranveer Brar Reveal His Favourite Way To Spice Up Chai: ‘Daadi Said It Helps With Body Balance’
Chef Ranveer Brar, one of India's most celebrated culinary personalities, is not only known for his extraordinary cooking skills but also for his unique food stories and food-centric films that celebrate his passion for cooking.
The celebrity chef opened up about the best way to make chai and revealed that his father's signature chai recipe remains his favourite.
Ranveer Brar On His Favourite Chai's Recipe
In a conversation with Ranveer Allahabadia on his YouTube podcast, Brar shared, “Mere pitaaji banate hai. (My father makes chai at home). While he doesn't reveal the recipe, he does add milk twice. He adds saunf in summer and mulethi (liquorice) in winter. My daadi (grandmother) said it helps with body balance."
Brar further explained that chai, or tea, can be prepared in many different ways, even when the ingredients are exactly the same.
A Dietitian's Take On This Recipe
Dr Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian at KIMS Hospitals in Thane, agreed that many traditional Indian home remedies are rooted in deep wisdom.
As per a report by the Indian Express, Dr Sheikh said, “Both mulethi and saunf act differently on the body with the change in seasons. Mulethi is warm and soothing. It eases coughs, colds, and throat irritation and supports the respiratory system, which is needed during winter. Saunf is cool and refreshing; it helps digestion, reduces acidity, and soothes the system during summer. Thus, this seasonal substitution of mulethi and saunf makes perfect Ayurvedic sense."
Sheikh explained that mulethi lends tea a gentle, earthy sweetness with subtle caramel notes that add depth and richness, while fennel seeds offer a light, refreshing sweetness that balances the heaviness of milk.
Things To Keep In Mind
According to Dr Sheikh, moderation is key when using mulethi or saunf in tea.
About one-fourth teaspoon is sufficient for two cups, as too much mulethi can make the tea overly sweet or slightly bitter, while excess saunf can overpower the flavour.
Sheikh also advised that individuals with high blood pressure or kidney problems should limit their mulethi intake, since frequent consumption can affect sodium balance.
