JEE Main 2026 Session 2 Guidelines: Key Exam Dates, Shift Timings, Entry Rules And Dress Code
JEE Main 2026 Session 2 Guidelines: The second session of JEE Main 2026, India’s largest engineering entrance exam, begins today, April 2. Students are required to reach the exam centre early, carry all required documents, and strictly follow the guidelines. Even minor negligence can lead to disqualification from the exam, so go fully prepared.
Lakhs of students will appear, so it is crucial to understand all the guidelines, timings, and dress code in advance to avoid any issues.
When and in how many shifts will the exam be held?
JEE Main Paper 1 – BTech/BE will be conducted on April 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, 2026. The exam will be held in two shifts: the first shift from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and the second shift from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Students must reach the exam centre at least one hour early. Entry will close 30 minutes before the start of the exam, and latecomers will not be allowed inside.
What is the entry time?
For the morning shift, entry to the centre will be allowed only from 7:00 AM up till 8:30 AM. For the second shift, entry will be allowed from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. All students will undergo frisking and biometric verification before entering the examination hall.
Record number of applications
This year, JEE Main has received a record number of applications. Over 16 lakh students applied for the April session, compared to 14 lakh students who appeared in the January session. Consequently, about 21 lakh new candidates have registered for the April session.
What to take to the exam hall?
Students must carry certain essential documents: the admit card and self-declaration form downloaded from the NTA website, a passport-sized photograph (the same as uploaded in the form), an original photo ID (Aadhaar card, PAN card, voter ID, or passport), and a transparent ballpoint pen. Photocopies of IDs or digital IDs stored on mobile phones will not be accepted.
What things are prohibited to carry in the exam?
Students are not allowed to carry any electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators, etc. Only essential items should be brought to the centre.
What are the rules regarding dress code?
There is no strict dress code for JEE Main, but students should wear comfortable clothing. Boys must avoid metal items such as chains, rings, or clothes with heavy buttons. Girls must not wear dupattas, stoles, or excessive jewellery. All students are advised to wear light and comfortable clothes. Slippers or sandals are preferable to shoes.
Many students are unsure about jeans. Jeans are allowed, but students should avoid pairs with metal zips, large buttons, or heavy embellishments, as these can cause problems during entry.
After both JEE Main sessions, ranks will be announced. The top 2.5 lakh students will qualify for JEE Advanced, which is the only entrance exam for IITs. To be eligible, students must have at least 75% marks in Class 12 or be in the top 20 percentile. Across all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other government institutions in India, there are approximately 63,000 engineering seats. These include 18,160 in IITs, 24,525 in NITs, 9,940 in IIITs, and 10,228 in other government institutions.
