Growing up as the daughter of one of India's most iconic stars meant Janhvi Kapoor was always under the spotlight. But in a recent Vogue interview, the actor shared how that spotlight turned unbearable when she lost her mother, legendary actress Sridevi, in 2018.

Janhvi recalled how the paparazzi culture was different when she was a child. Celebrities' kids were photographed freely, and she often found herself exposed in ways she couldn't control. “People saw me as privileged before they even knew me," she said, looking back on how the scrutiny made it difficult for her true self to be seen.

The hardest moment came when her mother died unexpectedly in Dubai. Janhvi revealed how she was left with no space to mourn privately. “The media would hound me and if I smiled to promote my film, I was criticised for seeming too okay. If I was quiet, then I was perceived as too cold. It's unfathomable that it could become a meme. Imagine losing your mother, and it's entertainment for half the nation."
The Lasting Impact Of Sridevi's Death
Opening up about the emotional toll, Janhvi said the coverage around her mother's death changed the way she viewed people. “I don't think anyone can understand what we went through. The loss is one thing, but the damage that came after really made me cynical about human nature. My sister and I have never let them see the cracks, and because of this, people have felt they can throw mud at us, that we are not really human. That took empathy and sympathy completely out of the question."
Sridevi Death
Sridevi, often hailed as India's first female superstar, passed away on 24 February 2018 due to accidental drowning in Dubai. She was just 54. The tragedy struck only months before Janhvi's debut film Dhadak released, turning what should have been a celebratory time into one shadowed by grief.
