‘Iranians Do Not Sneak Attack’: Iran FM Refutes Trump’s Claim Of Tehran Planning Strike On US
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Friday pushed back strongly against US President Donald Trump’s claim that Tehran was preparing to attack American forces, warning of a forceful response if Iran’s infrastructure is hit.
“We are men and women of principles. Iranians do not sneak-attack adversaries while engaged in dialogue. Only when attacked do we powerfully respond," Araqchi said in a post, adding that Iran has intelligence on Israeli plans to strike its infrastructure and would show “zero restraint" if that happens.
Aragchi’s remarks came after Trump suggested that Iran was on the verge of launching an attack on the United States, a claim that appears to have triggered Tehran’s sharp rebuttal.
Speaking about the situation, Trump said he believed Iran was preparing to strike US targets, suggesting that American action may have pre-empted a larger attack.
“The situation was very quickly approaching the point of no return… I thought that they were gonna attack us. I thought they would… if we didn’t do this at the time we did it," Trump said, citing inputs from top officials, including Marco Rubio and others.
He added that based on intelligence assessments, Iran “had in mind to attack us," framing US actions as necessary to prevent a potential strike.
Trump has also indicated concerns about the broader trajectory of the conflict, including the risk of the United States being pulled deeper into a regional war alongside Israel.
While backing Israel’s actions, he has at times signalled caution—particularly around escalation that could lead to direct US involvement or a ground conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained a hardline stance, signalling that military operations could expand further.
“There are many possibilities for this ground component," Netanyahu said earlier, hinting at potential escalation even as questions grow over whether the conflict could widen.
He also denied reports suggesting that Israel “dragged the US into a conflict with Iran“, calling them “fake news."
“This canard that we dragged the United States into this is not just a canard it’s ridiculous. Does anyone really think that someone can tell President (Donald) Trump what to do? Come on," he said, adding that Trump “always makes his decisions on what he thinks is good for America."
The exchange underscores rapidly rising tensions, with both sides hardening their rhetoric. Iran is signalling readiness to retaliate, while the US frames its actions as pre-emptive defence.
With attacks on infrastructure, troop movements and warnings from both sides, the situation remains volatile—raising fears of a broader regional confrontation.
