Indian Railways UTS App Won’t Let You Book Tickets Near Platform: Why You Must Stand ‘7 Meters Away’

A traveller shared a screengrab online and highlighted an issue encountered while booking a ticket on Indian Railways' Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) application. The post brought to attention a critical element of the UTS app and the regulations adopted by the Indian Railways for the online booking facility.

In the post shared via X on Thursday, November 13, the traveller received a message on their UTS mobile application while trying to book their local train ticket. The message read, “Your device GPS accuracy is 7 meters. Kindly stand 7 meters away from the railway station/track." The puzzled user raised the query on social media and wondered, “What does this mean. Should we go out of the station, cross the road, and stand on the opposite side and book a ticket?"

Why Such A Restriction

Mumbai-based travellers are barred from booking a local train ticket right near the railway station platform. According to the existing regulations of Indian Railways for ticket booking applications such as UTS, travellers are required to book their ticket away from the area in close proximity to the platform. This area usually ranges a few meters away from the platform, with travellers even required to move outside of the station premises at times.

Such a restriction helps railway authorities prevent travellers from buying online tickets at the last moment at the sight of the TC approaching them. The distance restriction also counters ticketless travelling and fare dodging, as observed by Indian Railways historically. Since travellers are required to purchase their tickets well before boarding the train, the authorities are also able to ensure the best possible travel management.

How To Use The UTS App Outside The Train Station

Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can use the UTS train ticketing application's QR codes outside a Mumbai local train station:

Step 1: Open the UTS mobile app on your phone.

Step 2: Near the ticket counters or entrances outside the station premises, you will find designated UTS QR codes displayed.

Step 3: Now use the app's QR code scanning feature, which is usually found with ‘QR Booking' or ‘Journey Ticket by QR' on the app.

Step 4: Take a scan of the QR code physically displayed at the station. It identifies your location and whether you are standing near the platform.

Step 5: Once the scan is complete, select your destination payment and go through the payment procedure using the digital methods provided.

Step 6: Upon successful completion of the transaction, the traveller receives an e-ticket on their phone. The ticket can be shown to the inspectors inside.

As stated, the QR code on the UTS app must be scanned within the specified time frame and within the designated meters of the platform area. You cannot move to a remote location to complete the booking, as physical verification is required.
