India vs India? Gukesh Names Pragg As Ideal Challenger For Maiden World Championship Defense
Reigning world champion D Gukesh may not be naming favourites for the upcoming Candidates Tournament. But when it comes to his ideal opponent, he knows exactly who he wants.
An all-Indian showdown.
Speaking at the Prague International Chess Festival, Gukesh revealed he would love to defend his crown against fellow Chennai prodigy R Praggnanandhaa.
“Personally, I would like to face Pragg. It would be an Indian clash, and it would be great for the Indian fans," Gukesh told Chessbase India.
Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi have driven India’s meteoric rise in world chess over the past two years. While Gukesh made history in 2024 by becoming the youngest world champion ever, the domestic pecking order has since shifted.
Praggnanandhaa overtook Gukesh in the live FIDE ratings last year, climbing to India No. 2, with Gukesh currently third and Erigaisi leading the national rankings.
A Rivalry Built on Respect
Praggnanandhaa has previously reflected on their rivalry: fierce on the board, friendly off it.
“I started playing before him. I was already stronger when I was growing up in my age category," Pragg told Curly Tales last year.
“When we are off the board, we are just normal guys."
Comparing styles, he described Gukesh as deeply calculation-driven.
“He is more calculation-based, trying to find the truth in the position, and going deep into every possible continuation," Praggnanandhaa said.
“I also go deep into the position, but I have my intuition guiding me… I think I am a more technical player while he is more of an aggressive and calculation-based player."
Caruana Backs Pragg
American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana also rates Praggnanandhaa highly — naming the Indian as one of the favourites to win the Candidates this year.
“I would put Pragg quite high among the favourites… last year he showed he can win top tournaments. That elevates him more than the current ratings," Caruana said.
