D Gukesh Feeling The Heat After Becoming World Champion: 'There Is Extra Pressure'
D Gukesh admits that competing in tournaments after becoming the youngest world chess champion has been a different experience, one that brings “extra pressure", indicating a constant need to justify wearing the crown. He made history by defeating Ding Liren in the 14th and final game of the 2024 World Chess Championship in Singapore.
Since then, however, the 19-year-old has struggled to find his footing, having yet to win a tournament.
During an interaction with users on X, Gukesh acknowledged the challenge: “For sure there is extra pressure (of playing as world champion) and I feel it too, but with each change I have adapted sooner or later in my career so far, and I'm sure I will do that this time too!"
Gukesh says doesn't lose sleep over chasing the world No. 1 ranking. “I know I will give my absolute best for it, but whether or not it happens, I would be happy with the effort I put in," he wrote in response to another question," he said.
Gukesh also reflected on the impact of computer-based training. While he appreciates the wealth of knowledge it provides, he warned that over-reliance can hinder creativity. “Training with computers has benefits and drawbacks. You learn a lot of new concepts and it makes work easier, but if it crosses the line, it can kill some of the creativity," he noted.
When asked about playing conditions, Gukesh said he doesn't mind a lively atmosphere. “It depends… but I think it's mostly about my mindset more than the environment. Still, it's more fun to play in huge halls with a lot of players, like in the Olympiads," he explained.

Anish Giri recently remarked that Gukesh is a completely different person away from competition. Gukesh, currently ranked world No. 10, says this duality is natural but that he has become more outgoing in recent years. “It has mostly been natural, and I've been similar outside of chess too, but in the last couple of years I've been more engaging and open. It was never through effort – everything happened on its own," he said.
