If companies can't bring in best people, they will go where the talent is
Tightening immigration rules in the US and Europe as well as increasing wage inequality is pushing global companies towards remote hiring and distributed global workforces, said Alex Bouaziz, co-founder and CEO of Deel, a Global payroll and human resources technology firm.
“Even if immigration tightens, the need to hire doesn't go away. If companies can't bring the best people in the world to them, they will go to where the talent is,” Bouaziz told ET in an interview. “Instead of moving people to the Bay Area, companies are opening offices in India, Latin America, Eastern Europe.”
The six-year-old US startup has emerged as one of the fastest-growing enterprise software-as-a-service companies globally and is competing with the likes of ADP, Rippling, Darwinbox and Zoho. It crossed $1 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) and serves more than 40,000 customers across nearly 150 countries. Backed by investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Coatue Management, Deel was valued at $17 billion in its Series E round last October. It provides end-to-end payroll, compliance and employer-of-record services that allow companies to hire anywhere without setting up local entities.
India is now one of Deel's most critical markets, both as a talent source and as an operating base. Bouaziz said Deel employs more than 1,000 people in India and is preparing to launch a local payroll engine for the country for deepening compliance with labour and tax regulations.
One of the biggest drivers of global hiring is the exploding demand for artificial intelligence (AI) talent, Bouaziz said, noting that wage inflation in US tech hubs has made local hiring prohibitive for many firms.
“Small and mid-sized companies just cannot compete with Bay Area salaries for AI engineers,” he said. “Remote hiring is no longer about saving money; it's about accessing talent that would otherwise be unavailable.”
Bouaziz acknowledged that AI is reshaping the labour market itself, particularly at the entry level. “AI will eliminate some junior roles, there's no denying that,” he said. “But new graduates will adapt extremely fast.”
He added, “In two or three years, a 22-year-old who is fluent in AI tools may outperform someone with ten years of experience who hasn't adapted.”
Bouaziz said Deel's rapid growth reflects a strong “founder-market fit” — a deep, personal understanding of the problem the company is solving.
“I am originally from France. I lived around the world. I knew that there were amazing people all over the world that could thrive in amazing companies. They just weren't living in Silicon Valley or in Mountain View. So understanding the problem at a very deep level helped us get the best out of the product really fast in the hands of our users,” Bouaziz said.
That experience shaped Deel's product philosophy and the company now operates 55 local payroll engines. It plans to increase the number to 100 over the next five years.
Deel has completed 13 acquisitions so far, primarily to accelerate entry into new markets and add regulatory or product capabilities. Looking ahead, Deel is focused on sustaining growth beyond the $1 billion ARR milestone, according to Bouaziz. While an initial public offering remains a long-term possibility, the immediate priority is execution, he said.
