As winter sets in, peas become a staple in everyday cooking. From curry and pulao to stuffed kachoris and hot soups, winter meals feel incomplete without them. Yet, shelling peas is often a tiring and time-consuming task. It can take nearly half an hour just to shell one kilo, leaving fingers sore and hands exhausted. That's why many people delay the job, especially when dealing with two or three kilos at once.
But what if you could shell five kilos of peas in just five to ten minutes? It may sound hard to believe, but this clever kitchen hack makes it possible. Popular on social media and YouTube, a simple trick shared by Navratan Rasoi turns pea shelling into an effortless task, without straining your fingers or wasting time.
If shelling peas feels like a chore you dread, this method is perfect for you. All it needs is hot water and cold water to loosen the pea pods quickly and easily.
Start by thoroughly washing the pea pods. Heat about one litre of water in a large pot, do not let it boil. Once the water begins to steam, add the pea pods, switch off the heat, and cover the pot. Let the peas sit in the hot water for around two minutes. This step does not cook the peas; it simply softens the shells slightly, which is key to the trick.
Next, prepare a bowl of very cold water. Adding ice will improve the results. Transfer the pea pods directly from the hot water into the cold water. The sudden change in temperature helps loosen the shells further. After one to two minutes, you'll notice how easily the pods open.
Once softened, shelling becomes effortless. You can lightly press one end of the pod and the peas will pop out on their own. Alternatively, place several pods between your palms and gently rub or squeeze them. The pods split open, releasing the peas in bulk.
Using this method, shelling five kilos of peas takes just five to ten minutes, compared to the usual 20 to 30 minutes for one kilo. It's fast, painless, and highly efficient, especially useful if you're preparing peas for freezing.
