Obesity is often discussed in the context of diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure but its impact on eye health receives far less attention. Yet the connection is profound. Excess body weight can quietly damage vision long before symptoms appear, making early awareness and prevention critical.
Obesity contributes to chronic inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and vascular changes that affect the delicate blood vessels in the eyes. Over time, this increases the risk of several serious conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), all of which can lead to irreversible vision loss if not detected early.
Dr Vikas Jain, Group COO, ASG Eye Hospital, says, “Managing obesity does much more for the body than get BP and cardiovascular health under control."
This statement underscores a crucial truth: addressing obesity isn't only about weight loss or cardiovascular wellness, it is equally about protecting long-term vision.
1. Diabetic Retinopathy
Obesity increases the likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes, which is directly linked to diabetic retinopathy. High blood sugar damages retinal vessels, causing leakage, swelling, and progressive vision loss.
2. Glaucoma
Higher body weight can increase intraocular pressure, leading to optic nerve damage. Glaucoma often progresses silently, making early screening essential.
3. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Obesity accelerates oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which contribute to macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss among older adults.
Why Prevention Matters
What makes these conditions particularly dangerous is that they develop gradually, often without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. By the time vision problems appear, significant damage may already have occurred.
This is why proactive steps are vital. Dr Jain highlights that managing obesity has far-reaching benefits for the entire body including the eyes.

• Maintain a balanced, nutrient-rich diet
Foods high in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, and E strengthen retinal health.
