Guest Speaker Shows IIT Bombay Hostel Room, Highlights Poor Living Conditions— ‘Lowest Luxury, Highest Package’

Getting into an IIT is a dream many students work towards for years. Long study hours, coaching classes and constant pressure are often seen as the price of success. But once students make it to campus, everyday life there is rarely talked about. A recent video from a hostel room at one of India's top institutes has now caught attention online.

It has led many to pause and think about what student life at an IIT actually looks like beyond rankings and salary packages.

IIT Bombay Student Room Goes Viral

A video shared from a boys' hostel room at IIT Bombay is now making waves online. The clip gives a close look at a small student room that looks far from the grand image many people have of IIT life.

The room shown in the video is tight and cluttered. Books are piled on tables, food delivery parcels sit in corners, empty cold drink bottles are scattered around, and bags and clothes are pushed under the bed. The space looks barely enough for daily movement, let alone comfort. For many watching, it came as a surprise, especially since IITs are often linked to success and high-paying jobs.

Why Did The Guest Choose A Hostel Stay?

The person who shared the video explained the background in the caption. He said he was invited to IIT Bombay as a guest speaker for a finance workshop during the institute's Tech Fest. Instead of staying in the guest house, he asked if he could stay with students in their hostel rooms.

“IIT Bombay Hostel tour of Student with 2 crore package, yet these guys live with the lowest luxury because success doesn't start with fancy at the beginning. IIT Bombay Hostel room tour," the caption read.

He further added, “I had the privilege to appear as a guest speaker in a finance workshop held at the IIT Bombay Tech fest event. I requested these students to stay with them instead of staying in the guest house of IIT. This was the most memorable moment of being a CA Student."

What Surprised People The Most?

Shared on December 23, the video has crossed 6.2 million views so far. Many viewers reacted strongly after seeing the limited space students live in, especially when news of multi-crore packages from IITs often makes headlines. Some expressed anger and concern over facilities.

A person wrote, “Please do not romanticise these horrible facilities given by an institute of national importance, funded by the central government!!!! These are students, not sweepers!" Another commented, “Govt has money for all freebies. No money for education and maintenance."

Others pointed out that hostel rooms are mostly used for rest. A user shared, “Exactly no time to spend in the room..my son is in IITB..Most of the time he stays in class or the library."

Some recalled their own memories. An individual wrote, “My sister was in IIT Bombay – I used to visit her hostel room- same I used to think of the kitna chota room." Another added, “Reminds my hostel days. Wo jo 8 by 8 ka room me sukoon tha ..na future ki worry na kal ki fikar."A viral video from a boys' hostel at IIT Bombay shows the cramped and cluttered living spaces of top students, challenging the glamorous image often associated with IIT life.
