IIT Madras Introduces BSc Exit Path For BTech Students, Assures Same Value, Placement
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras will offer a BSc degree to BTech students who choose to exit the programme after three years, subject to earning 250 of the required 400 credits. This option will be available to students from the 2024 batch starting in 2027. The institute is also considering extending the option to senior students from the current academic year.
However, such students must have attempted to complete the BTech programme at least once before choosing the BSc exit option.
IIT Madras is also planning to offer BSc degrees with specialisation. Each department will decide the number of core credits needed for a particular specialisation, said Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras.
“This BSc degree will help students to join higher education, including MBA, and appear for civil services. Those who exit later can also join our online BS degrees," Prof. Haridoss said.
Highlighting the value of the exit degree, Prof. Haridoss said, “We expect that the degree will be valued at least in line with BSc degrees in general, and may be valued more based on the individual student's academic performance."

On placement support, Prof. Haridoss said, “These students will get regular placement support in campus".
Clarifying the intent behind the move, Prof. Haridoss said, “At this time, the three year exit option has been made available keeping in mind the professional aspirations of the student. We expect that students keen on entrepreneurship will consider this option, for example. These students may move on forward professionally. Provisions have not yet been made for return to the program in the in-campus version at this time."

Officials said the move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP), which promotes multiple entry and exit options in higher education.
IIT Madras has also reduced the minimum credits required per semester by 10% to ease academic pressure. Students with higher CGPA will be allowed to take more credits, while up to 40% of BTech courses will be electives. The institute has also introduced interdisciplinary dual degrees and minor programmes.
