'Good For Venezuela, Great For US': Trump Meets Oil Executives At White House
US President Donald Trump on Friday (local time) held a meeting with oil industry leaders at the White House, pressing them to commit to large-scale investment to tap into Venezuela's vast petroleum reserves following recent US military action in the Latin American nation.
Calling the meeting “great," the US President said they “sort of formed a deal" which would bring an investment of billions of dollars, a move he claimed would benefit both the US and Venezuela through increased energy production and lower oil prices.
“We just had a great meeting with the oil executives. We sort of formed a deal. They're going to be going in with hundreds of billions of dollars and drilling oil — and it's good for Venezuela and it's great for the United States," Trump told reporters.
.@POTUS: “We just had a great meeting with the oil executives. We sort of formed a deal. They're going to be going in with hundreds of billions of dollars and drilling oil — and it's good for Venezuela and it's great for the United States. A lot of money is going to be made." pic.twitter.com/L5z1ShQ0hy— Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) January 9, 2026
“A lot of money is going to be made. Oil prices will come down although they are getting down pretty good now without it. And it was a great meeting we had today with the biggest companies anywhere in the world," he added.
US Pushes Oil Firms To Revive Venezuela's Slumping Output
At the White House roundtable, the Republican president urged oil executives to commit up to $100 billion in private investment to rebuild Venezuela's oil infrastructure. He also pledged “total safety" for companies willing to operate there, saying they would deal directly with the United States rather than Venezuelan authorities.
Executives from Chevron, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips and more than a dozen other oil and gas companies attended the meeting held days after US forces captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in a dramatic night-time raid in Caracas.
Venezuela's oil production has slumped below one million barrels per day. A key challenge for Trump in reversing that decline will be persuading oil companies that his administration has a stable working relationship with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, and that adequate protections are in place for firms entering the market. Although Rodríguez has publicly condemned Trump and the removal of Maduro, the US President has said she has so far cooperated with his administration behind the scenes.
‘Venezuela Operation Will Make US Richer': Vance
Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance, who joined Trump at a press conference earlier in the day, framed the strategy as part of a broader push to enhance US economic and security interests, even connecting increased energy production with domestic concerns such as reducing drug overdose deaths.
.@VP: The operation in Venezuela is “going to make our country richer, it's going to make our country more powerful, it's going to make our country safer, and it's going to lead to the further decline of drug overdose deaths in the United States of America — an amazing thing." https://t.co/ljAEb2mOO0 pic.twitter.com/2oY4qRpu6w— Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) January 9, 2026

“The operation in Venezuela is going to make our country richer, it's going to make our country more powerful, it's going to make our country safer, and it's going to lead to the further decline of drug overdose deaths in the United States of America — an amazing thing," Vance said.
Since the US military raid that captured Maduro last Saturday, Trump has swiftly shifted to framing the operation as an economic opportunity for the US. According to news agency AP, his administration has seized tankers carrying Venezuelan crude and said the US is assuming control over the sale of 30 million to 50 million barrels of previously sanctioned oil, with plans to control sales worldwide indefinitely.
