US President Donald Trump warns India of additional tariffs on Russian oil trade
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on India if it continues to purchase oil from Russia, citing it as a reason for past duty increases. Trump stated that Prime Minister Modi understood his displeasure regarding the issue. This comes as India's oil imports from Russia have increased, though it also boosted purchases of American oil.
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on India if it continues to purchase oil from Russia, issuing a fresh warning over an issue he had cited as the reason for doubling duties on Indian imports to 50% in August last year.
“We could raise tariffs on India if they don't help on Russian oil issue,” he said on Sunday. The US claims that India's oil imports have helped Russia fund the Ukraine war.
Talking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the latter “knew I was not happy”. “PM Modi's a very good man. He's a good guy. He knew I was not happy. It was important to make me happy. They do trade, and we can raise tariffs on them very quickly,” he said.
US senator Lindsey Graham, standing beside the President, claimed that India's ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, had last month requested the Trump administration to waive the 25% additional tariffs slapped on India for purchasing Russian oil. “I was at the Indian ambassador's house a month ago, and all he wanted to talk about was how India is buying less Russian oil. And he asked me to tell the President to relieve the 25% tariff,” he said.
In the past Graham had demanded that Trump impose tariffs on India for importing Russian oil.
The comments come in the backdrop of India's oil imports from Russia increasing to a six-month high in terms of both volume and value in November 2025. Russia's share in India's overall oil imports rose to 35% during the month, according to the latest official data. However, India also stepped up purchases of American oil, which scaled a seven month high in November.
Amid differences with the US over trade with Russia, India has maintained that its energy procurements will be guided by its domestic requirements and national interests. India has tapped non-sanctioned Russian oil companies to source crude and Russian President Vladimir Putin assured India, during the December 5 bilateral summit in Delhi, of continuous oil supplies.
The US President's latest remarks also come weeks after Trump and Modi held a telephonic conversation, during which both leaders stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in bilateral trade ties. They also exchanged views on expanding cooperation in critical technologies, energy, defence and security, and other priority areas that are central to the implementation of the India-US COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology), a strategic initiative launched in early 2025.
