Gen Z Refuses To Eat Biryani As Cold Drink Was Missing From Her Order: Is Soda Really Essential With Food?
If the phrase “ate and left no crumbs" had a face, biryani would wear the crown. Savoured for its rich aroma, layered spices, and indulgent taste, biryani is more than just a meal, it’s an emotion. And for many, it’s incomplete without a chilled glass of a carbonated drink like Thums Up, Coca-Cola, Sprite, or even Coolberg on the side. Don’t believe us?
A video is recently going viral that has brought this obsession into the spotlight. In the video, a woman shares how her younger sister refused to eat her biryani because the restaurant forgot to deliver her cold drink and sent raita instead of salan.
“Ek main hu jisne chup chap order kiya Birayani by kilo se, chap wali Biryani and chup chap khane lag gayi. Yeh meri behen hai. Iski bhai cold drink reh gayi hai aur iska salan ke badle raita bhej diya hai. Matlab kha lo bhai itna swad khana hai.
(I ordered Chap Biryani from Biryani by Kilo and started eating it. This is my sister. Her cold drink is missing. And they sent her Raita instead of Salan. I mean, eat it. It’s so tasty)," she says in the clip.
She further adds, “Bhai ye GenZ bache hai, khana khatm nahin karate. Aur ham hai, khana aaya aur kha liya. Ye hota hai elder aur middle child ka farak. Jo mil gaya, khush hai bhai hum. (These Gen Z kids. They don’t finish their food. This is the difference between middle child and elder child. We are happy that we got it)."

The video has since sparked a lively debate online, with social media users divided over expectations, money, and the complete dining experience.

Another said, “She’s right biryani tastes better with drinks."
“It’s about taste and paise bhi toh diye hai," stated a user.
An individual commented, “It’s not GenZ choice, if you are paying you should get what you have paid for. You are the wrong here , it’s nothing about how the food tastes."

Is Cold Drink With Biryani Really Important?
For many food lovers, carbonated drinks are believed to ‘improve digestion’ after a heavy meal. Health experts, however, recommend waiting at least an hour after a heavy meal before consuming carbonated beverages. Hydrating with water or opting for buttermilk may be gentler alternatives.
Soft drinks contain carbon dioxide and high sugar content. Biryani itself is rich and spicy, often containing ingredients like cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, oil, and meat, all of which can be heavy on the stomach.
Consuming carbonated soft drinks immediately after such a meal may increase acidity levels, cause bloating due to trapped gas, and spike blood sugar.
Is It About Digestion Or Just Taste?
While science may question the digestive benefits, for many Indians, biryani and a cold drink are simply about habit, flavour balance, and satisfaction. And the viral video proves, for some, biryani without a cold drink is simply incomplete.
