Budget 2026: Gaming industry welcomes proposal for creator labs in schools, colleges
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday announced a major push for India's creator economy while presenting Budget 2026 in parliament.

Sitharaman proposed government support for the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT), Mumbai, to set up animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics (AVGC) creator labs in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges across the country.
Industry executives welcomed the announcement, and said the move could help address growing demand for skilled talent in the creative and gaming sectors.
Akshat Rathee, cofounder and managing director, NODWIN Gaming, said, “As organisers of platforms such as NH7 Weekender and Comic Con India, we are constantly seeking skilled resources to shape immersive experiences. Initiatives like these will help widen that talent pool while accelerating original IP creation and high-quality game development.”
Sitharaman also highlighted the rapid growth of the sector, noting that the AVGC industry is expected to require around two million professionals by 2030.
Commenting on this, Animesh Agarwal, founder of S8UL Esports and 8Bit Creatives, said “structured skilling” would be critical to keep pace with the industry's expansion.
“Having built teams and businesses in gaming and esports over the years, I've seen first-hand how rapidly the AVGC sector is growing,” he said, adding that the projection underlined both the scale of the opportunity and the need to prepare future-ready talent.
Vishal Parekh, chief operating officer of CyberPowerPC India, said that while the initiative could open up more high-value job opportunities, there is also a need for strong technology infrastructure. “Realising this vision calls for access to high-performance computing environments that match global benchmarks. We commend the government's forward-looking commitment to strengthening India's AVGC ecosystem,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of early exposure, Sagar Nair, head of incubation at LVL Zero Incubator, said the proposed labs could inspire students to explore careers in creative fields at a young age. “The rollout of content creator labs can expand early access to future-ready skills and inspire students to pursue careers in animation, VFX, gaming, and comics,” he said.
“When skilling is paired with incubation and clear pathways to entrepreneurship, India can cultivate a generation of creators equipped to build original intellectual property and compete globally,” Nair added.
