In layman's terms, an index is a massive database of online material such as web pages, images and links, and indexing is the process through which search engines scan, organise, and store it, so that the material can be retrieved when users search for it.
Web crawlers, also called bots, are key to this process. They search the internet for new information, which is processed and entered into the search index. Search engines then use ranking algorithms to put the most relevant results at the top.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said the future of search lies in establishing smarter indexes for artificial intelligence (AI) and not just for browsing.
In an exclusive interview with ET's Samidha Sharma, Srinivas said that traditional web indexes were designed for users clicking through links, but new indexes have to let AI systems ingest real-time, grounded information and produce accurate answers.
Srinivas said he is betting on indexing and browsing. "It is the one thing Google truly has that most model companies do not. Building an index and a robust browsing stack is a long, iterative grind. There are not many playbooks or open resources. You learn by building, shipping, collecting data and improving," he said.

Srinivas added that Perplexity's index will be ready by the end of this year and may be as good as Bing, if not better.
Despite growing competition, Google remains the dominant player in the search indexing world. As per data, the company has nearly 90% of the global market share for search, with Bing and Russia's Yandex trailing. Google's infrastructure is unrivalled, powering billions of searches and organising trillions of web pages.
However, with the advent of AI, Google now faces challenges from platforms such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Srinivas also expressed an ambition to build globally impactful technology from India, hoping to inspire more founders to create products at Google's scale.
