Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas: Indians can build global companies, not just manage them
Aravind Srinivas, cofounder and chief executive of AI search startup Perplexity, says the time has come for Indians to be known as founders of global technology companies, not just professional managers. “Indians are not just meant for managing and climbing up the ladder to being CEOs. That journey was great, it inspired a lot of people, but I want India to show the world that we can build companies,” Srinivas told ET in San Francisco.
An IIT-Madras graduate, Srinivas leads one of Silicon Valley's most closely watched AI startups, valued at $20 billion, with backing from Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos, SoftBank Vision Fund, Nvidia, among others.

Jensen Huang showed it, he came here as an immigrant, studied, built Nvidia, and turned it into the world's most valuable company at over $4 trillion. Why can't we show that an Indian founder can build at least a $1 trillion company?,” Srinivas said.
Perplexity has seen rapid adoption in India, now its largest market, after a partnership with Bharti Airtel bundled its paid Pro service with mobile plans, Srinivas said. The app has ranked among the top downloads in Apple's India store, which Srinivas called as “crazy” growth in daily users.

He said Satya Nadella (Nadella), Microsoft's chairman and CEO, acts as a mentor and sounding board. “We speak almost once a month,” Srinivas said. “He's like a coach who looks at the big picture. Even though there's competition between Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, he thinks of the long-term value.”
Srinivas said Silicon Valley remains a unique place for outsiders to build, despite the Trump administration's steep hike in H-1B visa fees and broader uncertainty over immigration rules. “This place has always been for outsiders. Almost all the successful companies here came from someone thinking differently, questioning the status quo, and then executing relentlessly,” he said. “It is one of the few places in the world that is truly meritocratic.”

Still, he acknowledged the challenges for immigrants. “The biggest difference for someone who comes from outside is who you can really trust. You need people with credibility who can vouch for you, invest in you, and mentor you even if they might compete with you later,” he said.
To explain the ambition he wants Indian founders to adopt, Srinivas drew a parallel with cricket. “ Take the example of cricket and see how Indians aren't just national heroes, they're global icons. Sachin Tendulkar is considered the best ever, and the stats prove it. Virat Kohli is another example…That's the kind of recognition Indian founders should aim for in entrepreneurship. You don't need to talk too much, let your work do the talking.”
