From mourning to mandate: Assam heads to polls on redrawn segments
As Assam gears up for the 2026 assembly elections, the air is heavy with the sorrow of losing beloved cultural figure Zubeen Garg. With the ruling BJP aiming for a hat-trick in governance, they are rolling out fresh faces to rally support. Meanwhile, opposition parties are banding together in a spirited effort to take on the BJP's dominance.
Guwahati: Assam, still in shock and sorrow after the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg, will go to the assembly polls in early 2026. The sorrow was palpable in the way people celebrated Durga Puja and Diwali, which was very low-key this time.
Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, leaving fans across India in shock. The Assam government has instituted a special investigative team (SIT) of the CID and a judicial probe into Garg's death.
On December 12, 2025, the SIT of the Assam police filed an over 2,500-page charge sheet before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Guwahati. SIT has so far arrested seven persons and recorded statements of over 300 witnesses related to the case. There have been protests seeking justice for Garg who died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore.
BJP's STRATEGIES
The ruling BJP, which has started its poll preparations, launched a state-wide campaign 'Moiu Zubeen, Amiu Zubeen' (I am also Zubeen, we are also Zubeen) from October 23, 2025.
BJP, which is looking for a hattrick in Assam, has announced that it will field several new faces as candidates for the polls. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said that not all will get tickets this time for polls as after the delimitation exercise, there has been a surge in the number of constituencies of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe seats. The delimitation exercise carried out in 2023 has dissected the political landscape of Assam and political boundaries have changed. The 2026 assembly elections will be fought on the redrawn assembly segments. Many assembly seats have been rechristened.
Assam has 126 assembly seats. At present, the BJP has 64 MLAs, while its allies - Asom Gana Parishad, United People's Party Liberal and Bodoland People's Front - have nine, seven and three legislators, respectively. In the Opposition, the Congress has 26 MLAs, the All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) 15, the CPI(M) one, and one Independent.
Sarma had said that the BJP and its allies will contest 103 of the state's 126 assembly seats. "We are aiming to win around 100 seats. We will win the polls comfortably. People have seen the development work undertaken by the government."
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, while speaking at BJP Assam Pradesh state executive meeting held recently cautioned against complacency or infighting. Sonowal said, "Regarding the 2026 assembly elections, we are contesting from a position of strength thanks to the more than decade of Modi-led governance. But we must not become over-enthusiastic. Everyone must remain restrained and disciplined. The people are with us, but it is important that there is no infighting within our own party."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Assam on December 20 and 21 as he took part in several programmes. He came down heavily on the infiltration from Bangladesh.
Union home minister Amit Shah visited Assam on December 29 and said that in the next five years, the BJP government will throw out all the illegal infiltrators from Assam. He said, "The BJP government is committed to throwing away all the ghuspethia (illegal infiltrators), not only from Assam but from the entire country. Congress' vote bank politics to settle the illegal infiltrators in Assam has posed a threat to the security of the country."
CONGRESS WORKING ON COALITION
Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress has launched many outreach programmes to connect with the grassroots communities in the state. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) had launched its new campaign 'Raijor Padulit Raijor Congress' (People's Congress at the People's Doorstep).
In November, seven Opposition parties announced the revival of the Asom Sonmilito Morcha, a front to take on the BJP in the 2026 assembly polls. Leaders of the Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, CPI(M) and three other parties came together and resolved to fight the polls under a unified banner.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi had said, "To fight BJP's atrocities and the injustices of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, we have all united to provide relief to the people of Assam. We are coming together to contest the 2026 assembly elections to liberate the citizens of Assam."
Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, president of AIUDF, asked the Congress to learn from the humiliating defeat in Bihar and form a Mahagathbandhan of Opposition parties in Assam for the 2026 assembly polls.
Ajmal had said, "There was nothing wrong with the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar. Congress' strategy was faulty. If Opposition parties want to save themselves in Assam, they must resolve their differences and come together. If not, they must be prepared to keep on crying for another five years."
He clarified that AIUDF is not saying that it wants some parties to come with it, but that AIUDF is prepared to fight the polls on its own.
After the Assam polls of 2021, the core committee of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has resolved to sever ties with AIUDF and move out AIUDF from the Mahajot (Grand alliance). In 2021, Congress had cobbled up ten parties to form a grand alliance.
