From Living In An Orphanage To Becoming IAS Without UPSC Exam: B Abdul Nassar's Success Story
Every year, millions of candidates in India take the UPSC Civil Services Examination, spending lakhs of rupees on coaching. Despite this, most candidates fail to succeed. However, many have cleared the exam without spending a single rupee on coaching, achieving this through self-study, often coming from extremely poor and marginalised backgrounds.
Today, we will tell you about one such candidate who faced extreme poverty since childhood, spent many years in an orphanage, but with determination and dedication, overcame all difficulties and financial obstacles. B Abdul Nassar, a resident of Thalassery in Kerala's Kannur district, lost his father at the age of 5 and spent 13 years in an orphanage. His mother worked as a domestic help to support them. Despite these struggles, Abdul completed his education while living in the orphanage.
At the age of 10, Nassar began working as a cleaner and supplier at a local hotel to support his family. He graduated from a government college in Thalassery and worked various jobs, including selling newspapers, teaching tuition, and working as a phone operator.

In 1994, after completing his postgraduate studies, B. Abdul Nassar started his professional career as a government employee in the Kerala Health Department. His dedication to public service and hard work earned him steady promotions. By 2006, he had reached the rank of Deputy Collector in the State Civil Service. In 2015, Abdul Nassar was honoured as Kerala's Best Deputy Collector, leading to his promotion to the IAS in 2017. Hence, he needn't appear for the UPSC exam.
He served as the Housing Commissioner for the Government of Kerala before becoming the District Collector in Kollam in 2019. The remarkable journey of IAS officer Abdul Nassar is an inspiring story for UPSC aspirants facing similar challenges.
