From Dilip Doshi To Diogo Jota: Sportspersons Who Breathed Their Last In 2025

While 2025 was an illustrious year for sport worldwide, we also lost numerous athletes, across disciplines. We take a look at some of the most prominent individuals who breathed their last this year:

Thelma Hopkins: Hopkins, the 1956 Melbourne Olympic high jump silver medallist, passed away in Edmonton on January 10. Born in Kingston upon Hull in 1936, she moved to Northern Ireland and won her first senior titles at 15, taking gold in both the high jump and long jump.

Denis Law: Nicknamed ‘The King', Denis Law was the only Scottish Ballon d'Or winner, scoring 237 goals in 11 years at Manchester United and 30 in 55 matches for Scotland. He passed away in January, aged 84.

Syed Abid Ali: Ali was an all-rounder Indian player who was a lower-order batter and a medium-pacer. He played an important role in Indian cricket in the 1960s and '70s. He passed away in March at the age of 83 in the United States.

Fred Stolle: He won the 1965 French Open and 1966 US Open singles titles and claimed 10 Grand Slam men's doubles and seven mixed doubles crowns. Stolle passed away from cancer in March, aged 86.

Buvaisar Saitiev: The Russian freestyle wrestler captured Olympic gold in 1996, 2004 and 2008 and also claimed six World Championship titles during his illustrious career. Saitiev passed away in Moscow in March at the age of 49.

George Foreman: Iconic two-time world heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medallist at the 1968 Games. He passed away in a hospital in Houston in March at the age of 76.

Roly Howard: He spent a brilliant 33 years at the helm of Marine AFC, a tenure that was a world record at the time, overseeing 1,975 games between August 1972 and April 2005. Howard passed away last month at the age of 90.

Keith Stackpole: Keith Raymond Stackpole MBE was an Aussie cricketer who played in 43 Tests and six ODIs between 1966 and 1974. He went on to become a cricket commentator on radio and television in the 1980s and '90s and passed away in April at the age of 84.

Hugo Gatti: Hugo Orlando Gatti was an Argentine football goalkeeper who played in the Argentine Primera División for 26 seasons and set a record of 765 league and 52 international appearances, totalling 817 matches played. Gatti is the player with the most appearances in the Argentine league ever. He passed away in April at the age of 80.

Nino Benvenuti: The Italian boxer, 1960 Olympic gold medallist and former undisputed super-welterweight and middleweight world champion with a 120-0 amateur record, passed away in May aged 87.

Bob Cowper: He played 27 Tests for Australia and became the first Australian batter to score a triple hundred against England at home in 1966. He passed away in May at the age of 84.

Colin Booth: He won the First Division title twice with Wolves in the 1950s and earned England under-23 caps. He passed away at the age of 90 in May.

Anthony Nunn: He was a member of the Great Britain hockey team that bagged a bronze medal at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. He passed away in May at the age of 97.

Dilip Doshi: The spinner played 33 Tests for India and also had county stints with Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire. He passed away from a cardiac arrest in London in June, at the age of 77.

David Lawrence: He played for Gloucestershire and became the first British-born Black player to represent England, earning five Test caps. He passed away in June at the age of 61.

Diogo Jota: He scored 65 goals in 182 matches for Liverpool, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup and earned 49 Portugal caps. In July, Jota and his brother Andre Silva passed away in a car crash in Zamora, Spain.

Fauja Singh: A British-Indian man, thought to be the world's oldest marathoner, passed away at 114 after a car accident in India. He started running at 89, completing nine marathons between 2000 and 2013.

Alan Peacock: He earned six England caps and was a member of the national team at the 1962 World Cup, while at club level he represented both Middlesbrough and Leeds United. Peacock passed away in June at the age of 87.

Brian Owen: A Watford academy graduate and 170-match player, he later coached and served as a physiotherapist for Ipswich and England. Owen passed away in July, aged 80.

Hulk Hogan: Born Terry Bollea, Hogan was among the most iconic and loved professional wrestlers ever, playing a pivotal role in WWE's boom in the 1980s and later sparking another surge in popularity in the mid-1990s as the leader of WCW's villainous nWo. He passed away of a heart attack at his home in Clearwater, Florida.

Ken Shuttleworth: He earned five Test caps for England and represented Lancashire and Leicestershire in domestic cricket. He passed away in Congleton in August at the age of 80.

Angela Barrett: She won three Grand Slam singles titles (Wimbledon 1961, French 1955, Australian 1958) and the 1955 Wimbledon doubles. Barrett passed away from cancer in London in August, aged 93.

Robert Wells: He was a bronze medallist for Great Britain in boxing at the 1984 Olympic Games. He passed away at the age of 64 in September.

Dickie Bird: He went on to become a legendary cricket umpire after a playing career with both Yorkshire and Leicestershire. He passed away at the age of 92 in September.

John Jameson: He won the County Championship with Warwickshire and earned four caps playing for England. He passed away from a suspected heart attack in September, at the age of 84.

Marvin Brown: Bristol City's youngest-ever player at 16, he also played for England U16/U17, Tamworth, Yeovil and Salisbury. He passed away from rare bile duct cancer at 42 in October.

Dick McTaggart: The only Scotsman to win Olympic boxing gold (lightweight, 1956), he also earned bronze in 1960 and finished with 610 victories from 634 bouts. He passed away aged 89 in October.

Mick McNeil: The former Ipswich Town skipper played 173 matches for the club and nearly 200 for Middlesbrough, earning nine England caps by 21. McNeil passed away in October, aged 85.

Barry Knight: He played 29 Tests for England and represented Essex and Leicestershire in domestic cricket. He passed away in Bundanoon, New South Wales, last month.

Robin Smith: Nicknamed ‘Judge', Smith earned 62 England Test caps (4,236 runs, avg. 43.67) and spent his county career at Hampshire, winning two Benson & Hedges Cups and a NatWest Trophy. He passed away in Perth aged 62.

Billy Bonds: West Ham's record appearance holder (799 games), he led FA Cup victories in 1975 and 1980 and later managed the club. Bonds passed away last month, aged 79.
