‘Deep-Rooted Corruption’: BJP Targets Congress After Navjot Kaur’s ‘Rs 500 Cr For CM’ Bombshell
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday attacked the Congress party after former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, claimed that a person needs “Rs 500 crore in a suitcase" to become chief minister in the party, saying that she has exposed “deep-rooted corruption" in the Congress.
BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi said that it is very clear that the Congress has been totally engulfed in corrupt practices.
“Today, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, a senior leader of the Congress party in Punjab and wife of former Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu said that in Congress party anybody can only think of becoming Chief Minister if he is having Rs 500 crores in his suitcase," he said as quoted by news agency ANI.
“It has become very clear that corruption has reached Congress to such a level that, from leaders to carders from the government to the party, Congress has been totally engulfed in corrupt practices…" Trivedi added.
The wife of the cricketer-turned-politician dropped a bombshell allegation, saying that “a suitcase full of Rs 500 crore" has to be given to become the chief minister in Punjab.
While speaking to reporters after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria in Chandigarh on Saturday, she said that Sidhu will return to active politics for the Congress only if made the CM face in the state. She rued that there was a lot of infighting in the party and said “there are already five chief ministers (faces of the Congress) who are busy making the party lose".
“We always speak for Punjab and Punjabiyat…but do not have Rs 500 crore which we can give to sit in chief minister's chair," she said as quoted by news agency PTI.
“If any party gives him that power so that he can improve Punjab. We do not have money to give it to any party but we will give results and we will turn Punjab into a golden state," she added.
Asked if the BJP gives him this responsibility, then whether the cricketer-turned-politician will rejoin the BJP, she said, “I cannot comment on his behalf."
Navjot Singh Sidhu, a former cricketer, has not been active in Congress for several months and did not campaign in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He made a comeback to cricket commentary in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season and launched his YouTube channel in April to share insights on cricket, lifestyle and other topics.
At that time, when Sidhu was asked about returning to active politics, he had then said time will tell, stating that he did politics for people's welfare and it was never a business for him.
