CPI Retail Inflation Hits All-Time Low Of 0.25% In October: NSO Data

Food inflation, measured by the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), plunged to -5.02% in October from -2.33% in September, making it the lowest in the series. The sharp fall was mainly due to lower prices of vegetables, oils and fats, fruits, cereals, eggs, and transport and communication, the NSO said.

The report attributed the decline to the full-month impact of GST cuts, a favourable base effect, and easing input costs.

Rural inflation: -0.25% in October, down from 1.07% in September

Urban inflation: 0.88% in October, compared with 1.83% in September

Food inflation in rural areas stood at -4.85%, while urban food inflation dropped further to -5.18%.

Housing inflation: 2.96% (2.98% in September)

Education inflation: 3.49% (3.44% in September)

Health inflation: 3.86% (4.39% in September)

Transport & communication: 0.94% (1.82% in September)

Fuel & light: 1.98%, unchanged from last month

Which States Have Highest Inflation?

Among major states, Kerala (8.56%), Jammu & Kashmir (2.95%), and Karnataka (2.34%) recorded the highest inflation rates, while states like Uttar Pradesh (-1.71%), Madhya Pradesh (-1.62%), and Bihar (-1.97%) saw deflation.

Vegetables saw the sharpest fall in prices (-27.6% year-on-year), followed by pulses (-16.1%), spices (-3.3%), and onions (-54.3%). Meanwhile, silver prices rose 62.36%, and gold surged 57.83% year-on-year, the data showed.
