Comet 3I/ATLAS puzzles scientists again: Mystery around cosmic visitor's tail continues after NASA declines to release photos

Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is exhibiting unusual behavior, glowing green due to diatomic carbon and hiding its tail after passing the Sun. China's Tianwen-1 orbiter captured images, while some researchers, like Avi Loeb, speculate about its non-cometary characteristics and potential alien origins. 3I/ATLAS, an interstellar object believed to be a comet, recently passed its closest point to the sun.
Scientists are closely monitoring 3I/ATLAS, an interstellar object, as it exhibits unusual behavior after passing its closest point to the Sun. 3I/ATLAS passed perihelion on Oct. 29, coming within 203 million kilometers of the Sun. Now, a new image of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS has come to the fore which reveals that the interstellar visitor is glowing green and hiding its tail, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it.
Researcher Qicheng Zhang from Lowell Observatory in Arizona used the observatory's Discovery Telescope on Wednesday (Nov. 5) to observe the comet as it moved away from the sun. The comet became visible again after passing behind the star.

3I/ATLAS glows green and hides its tail
Researcher Zhang used a filter to detect diatomic carbon (C2) particles, which glows green. He noted that there's a bunch of large molecules in the comet that contain carbon and hydrogen (hydrocarbons). And when the comet gets close to the sun, ultraviolet (UV) light breaks these molecules apart, reports Live Science."It's sort of for the same reason that if we stay out in the sun too long without sunscreen, we get sunburnt," Zhang told Live Science. "The UV rays are destroying our DNA [in our skin cells], which is kind of a similar type of molecule in the sense that it's big and contains carbon."
The comet seems to have no dust tail in the image, but it actually does. Researcher Qicheng Zhang explained that the left side of the comet looks slightly brighter than the right because the tail is almost directly behind it, curving a little to the left. He said the comet's faint or hidden tail is normal and nothing unusual.

Chinese spacecraft sends GIF of comet 3I/ATLAS
Comet 3I/ATLAS has become a celestial celebrity since its discovery in July. China's Tianwen-1 orbiter has captured an image of 3I/ATLAS during its flyby of Mars, furthering efforts to shed light on the interstellar anomaly — which some have suspected has alien origins. The comet 3I/ATLAS can be seen streaking across the cosmos in an animated GIF compiled from several observations taken between Oct. 1 and 4, Space.com reported. There was also a stand-alone photo snapped on Oct. 3. “This was the first attempt to photograph such a distant and relatively dim target,” the China National Space Administration (CNSA) explained in a statement.
The team pointed out that 3I/ATLAS 10,000 to 100,000 times dimmer than their Martian targets, IFLS science reported. “The use of the high-resolution camera carried by the Tianwen-1 orbiter was determined, and key imaging strategies were carefully designed, ultimately leading to the successful completion of the observation,” CNSA reported. “This mission maximized the imaging capabilities of the high-resolution camera, specifically targeting the faint target.”

“Based on this observational data, researchers are conducting further in-depth studies of ATLAS,” the space agency declared. Meanwhile, astrophysicist Avi Loeb accused NASA of refusing to show him a HiRISE camera image snapped of the comet 3I/ATLAS taken on Oct. 2. He suggested that the photo could've offered clues to ATLAS' non-cometary characteristics, such as a tail that points toward and not away from the sun as is standard.
Since ATLAS's discovery in July, the Harvard scientist has claimed that the object (3I/ATLAS) has been exhibiting a host of anomalous behaviors that could suggest that it's an extraterrestrial probe.
In a recent paper, the scientist wrote that the object's non-gravitational acceleration — which was recorded by NASA last week — combined with the fact that it glowed “bluer than the sun” could indicate the “technological signature of an internal engine.”

Earlier this month, GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna called on acting NASA administrator Sean Duffy to share unreleased data and images of the Manhattan-sized comet, which is the third ever interstellar object recorded in our solar system.
“I write to request the release of specific observational data related to 3I/ATLAS, recently captured by NASA missions,” Luna wrote. “This information is of great importance to advancing our understanding of interstellar visitors and their interaction with our solar system.”
