Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS could be alien technology zooming through solar system? NASA ponders

An interstellar comet named 3I/ATLAS moves through our solar system. Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb suggests it could be alien technology. This is due to its significant mass and size. NASA scientists state the object is a natural comet. They confirm it poses no threat to Earth. The comet is larger than previous interstellar visitors.
An interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, a visitor to our solar system, has captivated the public for months. Astronomers are monitoring closely 3I/ATLAS, an interstellar comet that is moving through our solar system.
First seen in July 2025 from Chile, the comet moves at the incredible 130,000 mph, making it only the third known interstellar object to visit Earth's neighbourhood. Scientists are racing to gather data before it moves behind the sun.
Comet 3I/ATLAS an artifact of alien technology?
Comet 3I/ATLAS travelling outside the solar system and heading toward the Earth is much larger than scientists first believed, according to a new report. The cosmic anomaly has been under watch by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb and his team as it shoots across the solar system.ALSO READ: Comet 3I/ATLAS rockets through solar system at 130,000 mph— Could it pose a threat to Earth? Check details
Avi Loeb has claimed that the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS could even be an artifact of alien technology rather than a natural body because it weighs more than 33 billion tons and spans at least 3.1 miles across. The object, named 3I/ATLAS, is only the third interstellar visitor ever detected, after Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019.
The astrophysicist also revealed in a Medium blog post that new data and measurements indicate the comet's nucleus is more massive than first estimated. Loeb and his colleagues calculated a slight "non-gravitational acceleration" in its movement caused by "outgassing" which suggests the object must be far heavier than early models assumed.
The comet dwarfs Oumuamua, just a quarter-mile long, and Borisov, about 0.6 miles across. "This makes 3I/ATLAS three to five orders of magnitude more massive than the previous two interstellar objects we've observed," Loeb wrote in his post.
“Given the limited reservoir of heavy elements, we should have discovered on the order of a hundred thousand interstellar objects on the 0.1-kilometer scale of 1I/'Oumuamua before finding 3I/ATLAS, yet we only detected two interstellar objects previously,” he exclaimed.

What NASA says about comet 3I/ATLAS
NASA astronomers have dismissed the Harvard researcher's theory that a rare interstellar object racing through our solar system is a remnant of an alien civilization—and warned it “could potentially pose a serious threat to humanity.” The space agency has been studying the object closely through ground and space telescopes since it was first spotted, and state categorically it poses no threat to Earth.“It looks like a comet. It does comet things. It very, very strongly resembles, in just about every way, the comets that we know,” Tom Statler, Nasa's lead scientist for solar system small bodies, told The Guardian.
“It has some interesting properties that are a little bit different from our solar system comets, but it behaves like a comet. And so the evidence is overwhelmingly pointing to this object being a natural body. It's a comet.”
Images from the Hubble space telescope suggests it is up to 3.5 miles (5.6km) wide, and traveling at 130,000mph (209,000km/h), the highest velocity ever recorded for a visitor to the solar system. Statler said all comets, not just those that are interstellar, exhibit some elements of anomaly.

“Comets are mixtures of dust and ice, they're being heated by the sun, that heating is changing, and exactly how they respond to that is something that's a bit unpredictable,” he said.
“So even in our solar system, comets can have a history of suddenly brightening if there's, say, a particular pocket of ice that sublimates quickly and drives off a large amount of dust. “It's the sort of thing that our comet observers and experts are prepared for, and presents an opportunity to get more information.”
Statler said the object would not come closer to Earth than about 170m miles due to the positions of the planets over the next few months. It will make close passes with Mars, Jupiter and Venus.
“It's special because we now have the ability to discover these interstellar comets,” he said. “It's not that they're really anything new, but we've just recently had the ability to discover them, and we've discovered only three so far. This gives us a window we've never had before, directly into the composition of other solar systems.”
