Chinese scientists have revealed plans to unveil a prototype of the world's first gestational robot to give birth to a human infant by 2026. The initiative, spearheaded by Dr Zhang Qifeng, has raised fierce controversy over ethics, legality, and the consequences for humanity.

Chinese scientists have revealed plans to unveil a prototype of the world's first gestational robot to give birth to a human infant by 2026. Created by Kaiwa Technology, the new "pregnancy robot" uses artificial womb technology, bringing hope to those struggling with infertility and opening a new chapter in reproductive science. The initiative, spearheaded by Dr Zhang Qifeng, has raised fierce controversy over ethics, legality, and the consequences for humanity.
Researchers at Guangzhou, China-based Kaiwa Technology are working on what might be a game-changing development in human reproduction: a humanoid robot with a complete artificial womb. The fetus would grow within the robot's belly, bathed in artificial amniotic fluid. The nutrients would be delivered through attached tubes, mirroring natural gestation. The robot would interact with humans during pregnancy with the goal of simulating the entire nine-month cycle from conception to birth.
Despite the ambitious claim the key technical information particularly about how human sperm and eggs would be fertilized and embryos implanted or delivered is not revealed. The developers assert that the underlying technology for artificial gestation is fully developed in laboratory conditions and now merely awaits incorporation into a life-sized humanoid robot.
Who Is Behind the Project?
Dr Zhang Qifeng, the Kaiwa Technology founder and Nanyang Technological University affiliate in Singapore, is leading the project. The technology was unveiled, and developments were made known at the 2025 World Robot Conference in Beijing, Dr Zhang said. It may be possible for mass-market versions to be ready as early as 2026 at a price tag of about 100,000 yuan (approximately $14,000), which is a far cry from the surrogacy cost in many countries now.Potential Impact: Infertility and Beyond
The firm asserts that its pregnancy robot could provide new choices to individuals or couples who cannot or will not pursue a conventional biological pregnancy. Since infertility strikes approximately 15% of the world's couples, the market is potentially staggering. The technology may also open doors to novel society possibilities, like the single person or same-sex couple easier access to biological children from their own genetic material.Ethical and Legal Issues
The revelation, predictably, has been controversial on ethical grounds. Issues raised by specialists and observers are a lack of natural maternal-fetal bonding and possible psychological effects on children born in this manner, difficulties in collecting eggs and sperm ethically, matters still pending regarding the rights of the child and his or her identity, and Societal effects on the definition and role of parenthood.Guangdong officials are now cooperating closely with Kaiwa Technology to develop legislative and policy blueprints to address these new challenges. Experts caution that, as is the case with all revolutionary technology, there will need to be firm legal and ethical standards for responsible development and implementation.
Not Without Precedent
The pregnancy robot is an extension of earlier work in using artificial wombs to incubate animals. Specifically, scientists in 2017 sustained premature lambs for several weeks in "biobags" containing artificial amniotic fluid, a breakthrough that spurred further developments in artificial gestation in humans. If the pregnancy robot is successful, its release in 2026 might usher in the largest reproductive technology revolution since IVF, forcing a rethink of centuries-old ideas about giving birth, being a mother, and family. Also Read:
