OpenAI’s long-rumoured hardware ambitions are starting to take a clearer shape, and it’s not the phone many expected. According to a Bloomberg report published Tuesday, OpenAI’s first hardware device is a mobile smart speaker with built-in AI capabilities, designed to sync with ChatGPT and offer broader AI services around the home.
The device is still under development, and according to Bloomberg’s sources, it’s being built entirely screen-free. Internally, OpenAI is reportedly pitching it as a “humanlike AI companion that lives in the home," a description that sets it apart from how most existing smart speakers are marketed.
What makes this device genuinely unusual is how it’s being described. Sources told Bloomberg the speaker would have a “personality" and would proactively learn about its owner over time, aiming to become more personalised the longer it’s used. To do this, the device would reportedly have access to a user’s broader digital life, including things like emails, allowing it to build a more complete picture of the person it’s interacting with.
Perhaps the strangest detail here is physical. The device is said to involve “mechanical elements that can move on their own," and Bloomberg’s report notes it’s specifically designed to “feel like a companion and become a physical manifestation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT." In other words, this isn’t meant to sit quietly on a shelf, it’s designed to feel present and responsive in a way traditional smart speakers don’t attempt to.
According to Bloomberg, the device has been developed with input from several former Apple engineers, including people who were reportedly instrumental in building products like the iPhone and Mac. That detail carries extra weight given everything else happening between OpenAI and Apple right now.
The timing here is hard to ignore. Just last week, Apple sued OpenAI, accusing the company of stealing trade secrets. Apple went further, describing the allegations in its lawsuit as merely “the tip of the iceberg," suggesting more will surface during the legal discovery process. OpenAI has denied any wrongdoing.
Against that backdrop, Bloomberg’s anonymous sources say OpenAI feels confident that this new hardware product “veers significantly from anything Apple has on the market today," and that it’s “unlikely that it violates trade secrets" belonging to Apple. Given that the lawsuit specifically involves allegations tied to Apple’s hardware division and former employees who moved to OpenAI, that reassurance will likely face plenty of scrutiny once the device is actually shown publicly.
Part of a bigger race for AI hardware
OpenAI isn’t alone in chasing this category. The broader tech industry has been growing increasingly excited about consumer AI hardware lately. Hark, an AI lab founded by Brett Adcock, raised an oversubscribed 700 million dollar Series A funding round back in May, valuing the company at 6 billion dollars, specifically to build what it calls “personal intelligence," proprietary AI models paired with custom hardware designed to act as a “universal interface between humans and machines."
Interestingly, Hark hasn’t even revealed what its own device will actually look like yet, which says a lot about how much capital is already pouring into this space, even before any of these companies have shipped a working product.
