CBSE makes APAAR ID mandatory for board registration from 2026–27
Beginning with the 2026–27 academic session, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will make APAAR IDs compulsory for students while filling out board exam registration forms. The move follows the Board’s review which found that, by 2025–26, fewer than 50% of students in affiliated schools had generated their Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) IDs.
At its governing body meeting in December, CBSE also approved the introduction of two levels of board examinations for Mathematics, Science and Social Science in Class 10 starting from the 2028 academic year.
The APAAR ID is designed as a unified digital academic identity for every student, enabling seamless tracking of academic records. According to the meeting minutes, “To operationalize this initiative, CBSE has integrated the process of APAAR ID linking with the registration and list of candidates (LOC) modules for Classes 9 to 12. This integration ensures that every student registered with the board has a verifiable and unique academic identifier, facilitating data consistency and lifelong record management.”
It was in August when the Board directed schools to ensure that students’ APAAR IDs were ready before filling out registration and LOC. At that time, many states—including Haryana and West Bengal—reported difficulties in generating APAAR IDs. These states sought relaxation for students registering for board exams 2026.
Board data highlighted significant disparities among states. In West Bengal, only 9.01% of Class 9 students had APAAR IDs, while the figure for Class 11 stood at 17.83%. Haryana performed relatively better, with 54.42% coverage in Class 9 and 54.80% in Class 11.
Other states also showed low enrolment figures. In Gujarat, APAAR ID creation stood at 27.59% for Class 9 and 19.94% for Class 11. Bihar recorded 23.59% for Class 9 and 26.01% for Class 11.
The minutes further noted: “APAAR ID to be a mandatory field for filling of Registration and LOC Data for 2026-2027. CBSE to initiate communication and hand-hold schools in states where there was a problem in creation of APAAR ID. The committee and the house were hopeful of better results next year with efforts from the board.”
Separately, CBSE confirmed that it will implement two levels of board examinations for Mathematics, Science and Social Science at the Class 10 level beginning in 2028.
The proposal for differentiated curriculum levels was approved in 2024 for Class 9, where two tiers—“standard” and “advanced”—will be introduced from the 2026–27 academic session. Currently, CBSE offers two levels only in Mathematics (Basic and Standard).
As per the official document, “The board examination at two levels of these subjects will be conducted for the year 2028, after adequate preparatory time for schools.” The transition period is intended to allow schools sufficient preparation time and enable the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to develop revised textbooks aligned with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.
Since updated NCERT textbooks for Classes 9 to 12 are still awaited, the existing curriculum and syllabi will continue for the 2026–27 academic session.
Together, these measures signal a broader push by CBSE toward digital record standardisation, structured academic differentiation, and regulatory tightening in board examinations.
