CBFC Calls 14 Cuts In Vijay’s Jana Nayagan ‘Intermediary Step’ During Court Hearing: Report
Thalapathy Vijay's last film Jana Nayagan is still struggling to get certification from the CBFC, and the case related to it is currently being heard at the Madras High Court. In a new update, it has been reported that the plea filed by KVN Productions was heard today, Tuesday, January 20, at the Madras High Court, where the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) argued that the changes advised to the makers are ‘intermediary' and not final.
During the hearing, as per HT, the Central Board's lawyer argued that the producers were informed on January 6 that Jana Nayagan had been sent to the revising committee, despite earlier communication suggesting that a decision had already been taken. They also stated that there was no time to file a counter before the matter was listed on January 7 in the earlier High Court hearing before a single judge.
The lawyer further argued that the producers of the film made huge claims about their ₹500 crore investment and questioned why they would announce a release date without obtaining certification for their film from the CBFC.
As per the report, Madras HC reserved the order after hearing Jana Nayagan's producer's side post-lunch.
About Jana Nayagan's release conflict
Earlier, after the Madras High Court put a stay on a single judge's order to grant clearance to the film, the makers decided to file a plea in the Supreme Court against the stay. However, the apex court declined to entertain the matter and instead asked KVN Productions to approach the division bench of the High Court. It also directed the High Court to hear the plea on January 20, 2026.
For the unversed, Vijay's Jana Nayagan was supposed to hit theatres on January 9 but was postponed due to certification issues. “It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of Jana Nayagan, eagerly awaited on January 9, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control," the makers announced earlier this month.
“We deeply understand the anticipation, excitement, and emotions surrounding this film, and this decision has not been an easy one for any of us. The new release date will be announced at the earliest. Until then, we humbly request your patience and continued love. Your unwavering support is our greatest strength and means everything to the entire Jana Nayagan team," the statement added.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain. The film has been heavily marketed as Vijay's final cinematic outing before his full-time foray into politics, adding to the anticipation surrounding its release.
