Bring back Indian engineers for semicon manufacturing boost

India should focus on bringing back top engineers and chip design talent working in companies such as Qualcomm, Intel and Texas Instruments in the US and elsewhere to develop world-class semiconductor manufacturing, said Lip-Bu Tan, global chief executive of Intel Corporation.

"Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi's semiconductor policy is well thought through, and the company is committed to support the effort," Tan told ET in an exclusive interview on Wednesday, a day after he met the PM.

He said he did tell Modi about finding ways to bring back chip talent to India. "I told IT minister Ashwini (Vaishnaw) and PM Modi, success in AI and semiconductors will be defined by scale, identifying local leaders, growing homegrown capabilities, and scaling them globally," Tan said. "India has that opportunity, and I'm excited to be part of helping build those great companies."

He described the meeting with Modi "very inspiring," adding that they had a wide-ranging chat about semiconductors, compute and AI. "We talked about the MoU with the Tatas. We are very excited about the AI PC and he's very excited about it. We talked about how we are going to expand Intel's operation in India, the design service, advanced packaging, etc.," he said.

Under the partnership with Tata group, the two will package products in India which will go into building AI PCs, Tan said.

Intel has been elusive about manufacturing in India after a series of debacles that included moving a planned investment to Vietnam, citing red tape.
