Assam: Both ruling and opposition alliances finding it difficult to close seat-sharing arrangements
Assam polls: Ruling BJP is in talks with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF). However, there is extreme pressure from the grassroot workers to get more seats in this year's assembly polls.
Guwahati: Both ruling and opposition alliances are finding it difficult to close the seat sharing arrangements for the assembly polls. There are chances that in several seats allies may end up in friendly fights in assembly polls of Assam.
Ruling BJP is in talks with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF). However, there is extreme pressure from the grassroot workers to get more seats in this year's assembly polls.
In the 2021 assembly polls the AGP contested 29 seats, 26 alone and three seats saw a friendly fight. It won nine seats. The party has been in alliance with BJP since 2014.
Assam chief minister recently said, “We have started initial discussion with Asom Gana Parishad AGP, and we are hopeful we will finalise the seat sharing by March 9 or 10.”
When asked about claims being made by some AGP leaders for contesting more seats, he said, “I am not aware of any such claims. However, they can file nominations for that seat, but we too will contest those seats and there will be a friendly fight.”
United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), an ally of ruling BJP, has announced that it will contest a total of 21 seats in this year’s .
The party plans to contest 15 seats within the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) region and six seats outside BTC. BPF and UPPL have made it clear both cannot contest the polls together and there cannot be seat sharing arrangement between the two parties.
The opposition alliance announced that it will begin a joint campaign across the State in the coming days. Four parties came together to signal a united political front ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi on Friday said the alliance partners will soon hold coordinated campaign meetings across Assam.
He added, “We have only 30 days in hand and these 30 days are extremely important.”
He said the parties have decided to begin joint campaign meetings at fixed dates and locations across the State. The parties included, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M).
He said talks are underway with other parties such as Raijor Dal, Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation and Communist Party of India to expand the alliance.
Congress has already declared a list of 42 candidates. Assam has 126 assembly seats. These parties however have stated nothing about seat sharing.
Raijor Dal has been making repeated overtures to Congress for alliance and submitted a list of seats which the party is willing to contest.
Recently former Pradesh Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah left Congress and joined BJP. BJP is willing to field him from Bihpuria or Ranganadi. However, a section of party workers is protesting Borah’s candidature.
In the present assembly BJP has 64 MLAs, while its allies — Asom Gana Parishad, United People’s Party Liberal and Bodoland People’s Front — have nine, seven and three legislators, respectively. In the Opposition, the Congress has 26 MLAs, the All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) 15, the CPI(M) one, and one Independent.
AGP workers staged a protest in AGP office in Guwahati. The party workers insisted that Guwahati Central seat must be for AGP and Ramendra Narayan Kalita must be fielded. Post delimitation the West Guwahati seat ceased to exist. Workers said, " West Guwahati seat now Guwahati Central is the stronghold of the regional party.
