Zilla Parishad Poll Row: Deputy Chair Orders Satara SP Suspension, Chairman Reserves Order
The controversy surrounding the Satara Zilla Parishad elections has intensified into a major political confrontation, with the suspension of the district’s top police officer following allegations of high-handedness.
Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe Monday ordered the suspension of Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi and other officials, after chaos erupted during last week’s election process. The directive came after the issue was raised in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
The row stemmed from the Zilla Parishad presidential election, where BJP’s Priya Shinde defeated the Shiv Sena–NCP alliance candidate, triggering tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena.
At the centre of the controversy is Shiv Sena leader and minister Shamburaj Desai, who alleged that he was manhandled by police while attempting to cast his vote. Addressing the Council, Desai said he was forcibly stopped and dragged by plainclothes personnel, leaving him injured.
“In over four decades of political life, I have never faced such treatment," he said, raising concerns about the safety of ordinary citizens if a sitting minister could be handled in such a manner.
NCP minister Makarand Patil, who was with Desai, said that the Satara police department behaved in an atrocious manner by registering false complaints against their members.
The issue triggered sharp reactions in the House. Several legislators demanded accountability, with calls ranging from a detailed explanation by the Chief Minister to strict action against the police personnel involved.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said he had intervened during the election, instructing authorities to ensure that no eligible voter was denied their rights. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that a fair and thorough inquiry would be conducted.
However, the BJP has pushed back against the accusations. Minister Jaykumar Gore defended the police, stating that strict entry protocols are enforced during elections and that some individuals attempted to enter without authorisation, prompting police action.
With both sides standing firm, the Satara episode has moved beyond a local electoral dispute and evolved into a broader political battle within Maharashtra’s ruling alliance.
Authorities have ordered the collection of CCTV footage and initiated an inquiry into the incident. The outcome is expected to determine accountability, but the political fallout is already evident.
Coming at a time when local body elections are gaining momentum across the state, the controversy is being viewed as a test of administrative neutrality. The opposition within the alliance is likely to use this issue to corner the BJP, while the BJP appears determined to defend the system and shift focus to procedural violations. The outcome of the inquiry will not just decide accountability, but could also shape the political narrative in the run-up to upcoming elections.
