BJP claims disproportionate increase in Muslim voters in Bengal, TMC alleges ‘divisive politics’

The Bharatiya Janata Party has claimed before the Election Commission that there has been a disproportionate increase in the share of Muslim voters in West Bengal, The Indian Express reported on Saturday.
The state's ruling Trinamool Congress rejected the claim as baseless, and accused the BJP of playing divisive politics.
The BJP claimed in a document submitted to the poll panel that in the past 23 years, Muslim voters in West Bengal increased by 127.7%, while Hindu voters increased by 72.3%.
“From 2002 to 2025, total electors in West Bengal rose from 3.93 crore to 7.24 crore, an 84.1 per cent increase,” the document read, according to The Indian Express. “Hindu electors grew from 3.1 crore to 5.3 crore, up 72.3%, while Muslim electors rose from 83.9 lakh to 1.9 crore, a whopping 127.7%.”
The BJP claimed that the number of Muslim voters more than doubled in 37 parliamentary seats, while the number of Hindu voters doubled in only three Lok Sabha constituencies.
“At the Assembly level, the broadening is sharper because ACs [assembly constituencies] are smaller and more sensitive to local shifts,” the party was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. “The number of Muslim-dominated ACs has increased from 45 to 60 between 2002 and 2025.”
West Bengal BJP General Secretary Jagannath Chattopadhyay said that during the ongoing special intensive revision of voter rolls in West Bengal, the Election Commission should “focus on demographic change, and the cleansing process should be done accordingly”.
However, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Jayprakash Majumder asserted that there was no basis to the data that the BJP was producing. “There was no census organised after 2011,” he noted, according to The Indian Express. “The Muslim population increase can only be gauged through the census report.”
Majumder questioned how such an increase was possible when West Bengal's fertility rate is lower than the national average. He claimed that the allegation was “basically baseless and another example of the BJP's divisive politics”.
West Bengal is among 12 states and Union Territories where the Election Commission is conducting a special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Assembly elections are slated to be held in the state next year.
