The Election Commission is set to announce dates for the much-anticipated Bihar Assembly elections today, a contest that comes at a time of deep churn in the state's political landscape. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is no longer at his prime, BJP's power face Sushil Kumar Modi is gone, and veteran Ram Vilas Paswan is no more. Into this mix steps strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor, adding a new twist to Bihar's evolving power play.
The electoral battle is shaping up as a direct face-off between Nitish Kumar-led NDA and the Mahagathbandhan, spearheaded by the RJD.
In the 243-member Bihar Assembly, the NDA currently holds 131 seats—BJP 80, JD(U) 45, HAM(S) 4, and support from two Independents—while the Opposition INDIA bloc controls 111, led by RJD (77), followed by Congress (19), CPI(ML) (11), and CPI(M) and CPI with two each.
Nitish Kumar: The Veteran at the centre of it all
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, leader of the JD(U), is serving his ninth term and remains the NDA's central figure. Having switched sides between the BJP and the Opposition multiple times, his leadership and governance continue to anchor the NDA's campaign narrative. However, recent speculation about his health and fitness has sparked political chatter, with Opposition leaders publicly voicing concern over his “well-being” and its “worrisome fallout” on government functioning and accountability.Tejashwi & Tej Pratap Yadav: The RJD's twin stories
Tejashwi Yadav, the former deputy chief minister, continues to enjoy strong support among youth and RJD loyalists. According to a C-Voter survey, he remains the most preferred candidate for the CM post.His elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav, recently expelled from RJD, has floated a new outfit, the Jan Shakti Janata Dal, with a blackboard as its poll symbol. Though Tej Pratap claimed support from five smaller parties, Election Commission sources (PTI) said the outfit is yet to be registered or allotted a symbol.
Chirag Paswan: Confident, loyal to NDA
Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan has brushed aside speculation about seat-sharing tensions, asserting the NDA will win over 225 of 243 seats, as per India Today report.In 2020, his party contested 137 seats independently, winning only one, but damaging JD(U)'s tally, which fell to its lowest in two decades. This time, Chirag's LJP (RV) is firmly in the NDA fold alongside JD(U) and Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Morcha, the report added.
Upendra Kushwaha: Uneasy ally
RLM chief and Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha is reportedly miffed over the BJP's decision to re-induct Bhojpuri actor Pawan Singh, who had hurt Kushwaha's prospects in Karakat during the Lok Sabha polls.The move, aimed at consolidating Rajput votes, has revived regional friction. Despite being accommodated in the Rajya Sabha, Kushwaha is said to be upset over the BJP's delay in giving RLM a Legislative Council berth.
Pawan Singh: BJP's Rajput reclamation bid
Ahead of the polls, the BJP has brought back Bhojpuri star Pawan Singh, who met Amit Shah and JP Nadda before rejoining the party. Singh's return is seen as an effort to win back Rajput voters in the Magadh–Shahabad region, where the NDA lost seven seats after his independent run in 2024.Asaduddin Owaisi: Keeping options open
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said his party may join the INDIA bloc if allotted six seats, as per a PTI report. In 2020, AIMIM contested 20 seats, winning five, largely in Seemanchal, a Muslim-dominated region.
