Bangladesh T20 World Cup: Venue Deadlock Continues, Two Indian Cities Under Spotlight
ICC and Bangladesh Cricket Board dispute T20 World Cup venues as Bangladesh favours Sri Lanka because of India-Bangladesh tensions.
The International Cricket Council and the Bangladesh Cricket Board are still not seeing eye to eye on deciding on an Indian venue to host the visitors for the T20 World Cup, with the BCB still intent on playing at a neutral venue rather than in any Indian city.
With just over three weeks to go before the tournament, it remains unclear whether Bangladesh will travel to India for its scheduled games. The BCB has requested the ICC on several occasions to move all its matches to co-host Sri Lanka, citing player safety concerns amidst rising political tensions between India and Bangladesh.
As per Cricbuzz, the ICC is exploring alternative venues, but it is unlikely they will be in Sri Lanka, despite Bangladesh's insistence on playing there.
The report states that the ICC and BCCI, co-hosts of the World Cup, have approached the Tamil Nadu and Kerala Cricket Associations, exploring the possibility of moving Bangladesh's games to Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram.
The report adds that both TNCA and KCA have expressed willingness to host the games. Chepauk, already a World Cup venue, is slated to host seven matches, including a potential India-Australia Super 8 clash.
TNCA officials have informed the ICC and BCCI that they can accommodate the games without problem, as they have eight tracks available.
According to the current schedule, Bangladesh are all set to play three games in Kolkata, against the Windies on February 7, Italy on February 9 and England on February 14, before heading to Mumbai to face Nepal on February 17.
After the BCCI asked IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release pacer Mustafizur Rahman, Bangladesh raised security concerns about travelling to India and has written twice to the ICC requesting a venue change.
The ICC is yet to respond and is expected to do so on Monday (January 12). Even then, the likelihood of accommodating Bangladesh's request to move its games to Sri Lanka seems slim, given the logistical challenges so close to the tournament's February 7 start.
