Babar Azam has broken Virat Kohli's long-standing T20I world record.
Pakistan star Babar Azam went past Virat Kohli's record of most half-centuries in T20Is on Sunday (February 2). In the first innings of the third T20I against Australia, he scored an unbeaten 36-ball 50 as Pakistan smashed 207/6 in the first innings to eventually win by 111 runs and complete a 3-0 series sweep.
This was Babar's 39th fifty in the format, one more than Kohli, making the Pakistani the first player to get to the mark. He got to the mark in 139 innings, compared to Kohli's 125. The next in the list are Rohit Sharma (37), Mohammad Rizwan (31) and David Warner (29). Among them, Kohli, Rohit and Warner have retired from T20Is while Rizwan is out of favor, giving Babar a clear run to extend the lead.
However, Babar's knock in the third T20I revealed his biggest issue, too. Babar had the lowest strike rate in the innings for any player who faced at least five balls — this inability to find big shots in high-scoring games was a major concern in the recent Big Bash League.
While Kohli and Rohit never had the best strike rates, they could still adjust better to the situation. Babar would need to find that in him if Pakistan are presented with flat tracks in Sri Lanka for the 2026 T20 World Cup, especially because the Men in Green's excellent bowling group would find it difficult to consistently win matches.
Early wickets saw Fakhar Zaman depart for 10 and captain Salman Agha for five, but Saim Ayub and Babar steadied the innings with their 69-run third-wicket partnership.
Ayub set the tempo at the top, striking a brisk 56 off 37 balls, while Azam anchored the innings with an unbeaten 50. Shadab Khan then provided late fireworks, smashing 46 off just 19 deliveries as Pakistan surged to 207, scoring 70 runs in the final five overs.
Australia's chase unravelled almost immediately. Captain Mitchell Marsh was bowled by Shaheen Shah Afridi for one in the opening overs, triggering a collapse. Spinner Mohammad Nawaz removed Matthew Short cheaply and later accounted for Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis, while Shaheen claimed two wickets as Australia slumped to 63 for 5.
Nawaz completed a career-best spell of 5 for 18 by dismissing Josh Philippe and Cooper Connolly as Australia were bowled out for 96.
