Balochistan On The Edge: Trains Halted, Communication Cut Amid Attacks And Counter-Insurgency Ops
Train services across Pakistan's Balochistan province remain suspended as security agencies have not granted clearance amid ongoing military operations and continued militant activity.
Pakistan Railways on Wednesday confirmed that all train services in Balochistan have been suspended until further notice due to the prevailing security situation. The decision came a day after the Railway Ministry announced the restoration of the Jaffer Express to and from Quetta, a move that was later rolled back after security clearance was denied.
Trains affected by the suspension include the Jaffer Express (Quetta–Peshawar), Bolan Mail (Quetta–Karachi), the Chaman local passenger train, and several other services operating within and out of the province. Officials cited heightened security threats and the inability to ensure passenger safety.
The suspension of rail services coincides with continued counter-insurgency operations and skirmishes in multiple towns across Balochistan, according to intelligence inputs. Cellular and mobile data services also remain suspended in several cities, entering the sixth consecutive day of communication restrictions.
The security clampdown follows the Balochistan Liberation Army's (BLA) announcement of “Operation Herof 2.0", which the group claims is ongoing against Pakistan's armed forces. According to the BLA, the operation began on January 31 with coordinated attacks on 12 locations across 10 cities, including Quetta and Gwadar. The group has claimed that the attacks resulted in the deaths of 22 Pakistani security personnel.
Pakistan's military, however, has issued a sharply different account. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that 216 militants linked to the BLA were killed as security forces concluded “Operation Radd-ul-Fitna-1" in Balochistan. Independent verification of casualty figures from either side remains unavailable.
In the aftermath of the attacks, China has reportedly suspended all ground operations in Gwadar and other parts of Balochistan, underscoring growing concerns over the security of Chinese personnel and investments linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Intelligence sources maintain that no security clearance has been granted so far for the resumption of train services, indicating that restrictions are likely to continue as operations remain underway across the province.
