Assam Makes State's History And Geography Compulsory For Classes 6-8

The Assam Cabinet has approved a key decision to make Assam's history and geography compulsory subjects for students of Classes 6, 7 and 8. The move follows recommendations made by a committee led by Justice (Retd.) Biplab Kumar Sharma. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on social media, stating that the step aims to help students gain deeper understanding of their state.

In today's #AssamCabinet meeting, we resolved to✅Set up Centre of Excellence in Aerospace & Defence etc sectors✅Approve the Assam Logistics & Warehousing Policy✅Transfer land to AAI for Doloo Airport✅Make Assam History & Geography compulsory in schools

Students will now have to appear for separate exams of 50 marks each for these two subjects, and the curriculum will be implemented across all elementary and upper primary schools in Assam.

This decision comes at a time when several issues in the education sector were raised in the Assembly. The state government recently informed that over 1,400 interior schools still do not have drinking water and toilet facilities. It was also revealed that nearly 28,000 teaching posts are vacant across government schools.

Along with curriculum reforms, the Cabinet approved Rs 243.66 crore to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at Assam Engineering College, Guwahati. The centre will focus on areas such as aerospace and defence, automotive technologies, and electric vehicles. The CoE aims to develop industry-ready students, support skill training, and boost startups and MSMEs.

The government also cleared the proposal to set up a new Sainik School at Karbi Anglong at an estimated cost of Rs 335 crore. This will be the second such school in the district. Funding will come from both state and central government sources.

Meanwhile, the Assembly passed six education-related bills, including two legislation for Azim Premji University and NERIM University. Other bills addressed teacher recruitment, fee regulation, provincialisation, and institutional restructuring. These were approved despite an opposition walkout.
