Samsung Electronics names new head of its key decision-making body

Samsung Electronics said on Friday it had named HK Park as the new head of its business support office, a key decision-making body of the technology giant that serves chairman Jay Y. Lee.

The body, which has been upgraded from a "task force," is a key strategy unit that acts as a mini-control tower inside Samsung Group, South Korea's top conglomerate whose businesses range from chips to smartphones, ships and pharmaceuticals, coordinating across business units and affiliates, analysts said.

Park, a former CFO at Samsung Electronics, joined the Business Support Task Force a year ago.

The reshuffle marks the first major change of the office which was formed after Samsung Group in 2017 disbanded its power centre that had been criticised for its role in a graft scandal that led to Lee's imprisonment.

Lee was pardoned in 2022 after serving 18 months in jail for bribery in the scandal that led to massive protests and brought down then-President Park Geun-hye in 2017.

Park's predecessor, Chung Hyun-ho, will assume an advisory role to Lee, Samsung said.

Vice Chairman Chung, 65, "expressed his intention to step down from management to focus on nurturing future leaders, as Samsung's business has been back on track," a Samsung spokesperson said.

Samsung does not have a plan to increase the personnel in the business support office, the spokesperson said.
