The business world was left shaken after Vedanta chairman Anil Agarwal lost his son, Agnivesh, at the age of 49. Agnivesh passed away in the United States following a cardiac arrest. He had been recovering from injuries sustained in a recent skiing accident.
Calling it the darkest day of his life, Anil Agarwal shared an emotional post mourning his son's death. While the message drew an outpouring of condolences and support for the grieving family, it also unexpectedly sparked a broader conversation around how people express sympathy online.
RPG Group chairperson Harsh Goenka reacted strongly after noticing that thousands of users had clicked the “like" button on Agarwal's post announcing his son's passing. Questioning the appropriateness of such reactions, Goenka asked whether liking a post is the right way to express grief or empathy when a parent loses a child.

Taking to X (Formerly Twitter), Goenka, without mentioning Anil Agarwal, wrote, “A child passes away. A grieving father pours his heart out. Thousands respond with a ‘like'. Is this the way to show condolences in the modern age? Or have I simply failed to learn the language of social media sorrow?"

While many stood with Harsh Goenka, others shared a different view. They felt that reacting with a like to a tragic post may look cold, but most users do not mean any harm. Many people struggle to show sadness online and are unsure what to write. Social media offers limited ways to react, and the like button becomes the easiest option. For some, it is simply a way to show that they have seen the post and understand the pain.
Reacting to Harsh Goenka's post, a social media user wrote, “In moments of grief, many don't have the right words. The ‘like' often isn't approval—it's presence, a quiet “we see you, we stand with you." Social media compresses emotion into a button, but intent still matters. Empathy hasn't vanished—its language has changed."
“That's so elementary. Likes here only mean to show support for the grieving father," another user added.
Agreeing with his post, an individual said, “That button should be called a read button, not a like button. I agree with what you say. I avoid liking such posts. I only reply to them."
Meanwhile, someone else clarified, “Like is like a heartfelt condolences….its about acknowledging …. No one is being heartless here."
Agnivesh's Death Triggers Health Debate
Agnivesh Agarwal's sudden death also led to a health discussion online. Users pointed out that more young individuals are losing their lives these days, often due to heart-related issues. One woman shared her own painful story about losing her healthy father without any warning and asked others on social media why such sudden deaths are becoming more common.
She wrote, “My dad was completely healthy, no signs of major illness. Got a sudden heart attack and is no more. I used to hear such cases unless it happened with me. What is happening?"
Replying to her, an individual explained, “The problem is actually bigger and deeper than it actually looks. Food Quality, Air Quality, Water which we are consuming, constant stress, work culture, everything has become toxic. No human body is really made up for such an atrocious environment both outside and inside of it."

He further explained that heart problems are beginning much earlier than most people realise. Damage to the heart and blood vessels can start as early as the teenage years. Factors such as poor blood sugar control and chronic inflammation within the body gradually cause the arteries to stiffen, often long before a person is diagnosed with diabetes. This constant internal stress weakens the system over time.
As a result, a single moment of intense stress or sudden physical strain can trigger a collapse. Many warning signs go unnoticed because people are not taught to take them seriously. Chest pain is often dismissed as gas, jaw pain is ignored, persistent fatigue is blamed on work pressure, and a racing heartbeat is attributed to stress. Since young people believe heart attacks happen only to older individuals, they often fail to listen when their bodies are trying to send warning signals.
