Amid Bengaluru’s Traffic Trouble, CM Sidda’s Appeal To Wipro’s Azim Premji | Traffic-Easing Plan Explained
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Wipro founder Azim Premji where he asked for his support in easing traffic along Bengaluru's Outer Ring Road (ORR). In his letter, the Chief Minister pointed out the heavy traffic congestion at busy junctions like Iblur and proposed a potential solution that involves the IT giant's campus.
He proposed for limited vehicular movement through Wipro's campus that could provide an alternative route during rush hours.
Karnataka CM Proposes Bengaluru ORR Traffic Solution
In his letter dated September 19, Siddaramaiah stressed on the need for urgent action and explained how Wipro's cooperation could help address traffic challenges along the ORR.
“I extend my warm greetings to you and sincerely appreciate Wipro's continued contribution to the progress of Karnataka's IT ecosystem and overall socio-economic development. One of the key challenges currently facing Bengaluru, particularly along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) corridor at Iblur junction, is severe traffic congestion during peak hours, which adversely impacts mobility, productivity, and the quality of urban life," Siddaramaiah wrote.
He further added, “In this context, I wish to explore the possibility of allowing limited vehicular movement through the Wipro campus, subject to mutually agreed terms and necessary security considerations."
Siddaramaiah also pointed out that traffic and urban mobility experts estimate that allowing vehicles to pass through the campus could ease congestion on the nearby stretches of the ORR by nearly 30 per cent during peak office hours.
The Chief Minister wrote that Premji's support could “go a long way in easing traffic bottlenecks, enhancing commuter experience, and contributing to a more efficient and livable Bengaluru." He urged him Wipro to engage with government officials to finalize a feasible plan promptly.
Authorities Take Action Across ORR
According to an official release, Karnataka Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Tushar Giri Nath, conducted a joint inspection on Thursday, September 18, along the ORR stretch, PTI reported.
Focused Upgrades Across Key ORR Spots
Nath has instructed civic agencies to urgently carry out infrastructure upgrades along the ORR.
Hosur Main Road (Near Shanthala Nagar)
* Remove unused barricades from areas where metro work has been completed.
Silk Board Junction
* Stormwater drains to be cleaned regularly to prevent waterlogging.
* A detailed roadmap to be prepared for making long-term improvements to the junction.
Agara Lake Road
* Authorities have been instructed to complete the long-delayed white-topping work as quickly as possible.
* Temporary repairs to be carried out immediately.
Iblur Junction
* A skywalk to be constructed to improve pedestrian safety.
* Implementation of measures to prevent waterlogging in the area.
* Conducting a feasibility study for a “magic box" underpass to ease vehicle movement.
Access Ramps Along ORR
* Officials have been asked to design 20 access ramps to allow smoother movement between service roads and the main carriageway.
* These ramps are expected to cut congestion by around 30–40 per cent once completed.
Agara Junction Flyover
* Replacement of a damaged pipe that causes rainwater to spill onto the road below.
* Milling and patching of the deteriorated lower section of the flyover using eco-fix materials to fill potholes.
Department Responsibilities
* Departments such as BMRCL, BWSSB and BESCOM to restore road surfaces after completing their work.
* Any potholes or damage caused during their work should be repaired immediately.
* Place signs to be put up at such spots to show which department is responsible.
