Allah Ko Nahi Pasand': When Mohammed Rafi Returned From Haj And Told Son 'Main Retire Hogaya
For decades, fans believed Mohammed Rafi briefly stepped back from playback singing because of Kishore Kumar's dominance in the 1970s. The tale of two legends locked in rivalry has often been repeated in film circles. But Rafi's son, Shahid Rafi, has now broken the myth — saying the real reason was far more personal and rooted in his father's deep faith.
“It wasn't Kishore Kumar — it was fear of sin"
In a new interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Shahid recalled how his father suddenly chose to retire at the peak of his career. “This was in 1971 and 1972; two years. Dad went for Haj with mom; it was the second Haj, the ‘bada Haj, or what we call the ‘Akbari Haj'. Dad was a very god-fearing person, and he was very young, he was around 40 at the time. During the Haj, some maulana told him, ‘Rafi saab, yeh jo aap sangeet mein hain, yeh bahut bada gunaah hai, upar waala aapko maaf nahi karega'."
The comment left the singer shaken. Shahid said his father returned from Haj and stunned everyone with one sentence, “I'm retiring."
Retreat to London
Rafi withdrew from Mumbai and even moved to London for a while. “He said that he won't sing again. I hear so many stories about music directors turning their back on him, and him being depressed for years. But the truth is that he felt he had committed a sin," Shahid shared.
His elder brother tried reasoning with him, telling Rafi that music was the only skill he had. But the singer was unmoved, insisting, “Main retire hogaya, Allah ko nahi pasand, yeh gunaah hai."
The turnaround
Ironically, it was another cleric in London who convinced Rafi otherwise. The maulana reminded him that music was a gift from God and that he needed to use it to provide for his family. Music director Naushad echoed the same thought when Rafi returned to Mumbai. By then, however, some producers had already replaced him with other singers. Even so, Shahid said his father never begged for work.
A voice that never fades
Honoured with the Padma Shri in 1967, Mohammed Rafi remains one of Hindi cinema's most celebrated playback voices. He passed away in 1980 at the age of 55, leaving behind classics that still define Bollywood's golden era. His centenary was marked in 2024, a reminder that even a temporary silence from Rafi could never dim his legacy.
