Serena Williams has refused to shut down talk of a potential return to professional tennis, offering a carefully worded response that has reignited speculation around the sport's most decorated modern champion.
Asked directly whether a comeback was on the cards, the 23-time Grand Slam singles winner replied simply: “I don't know. I'm just going to see what happens."
Williams, now 44 and a mother of two, has not competed since her third-round exit at the 2022 US Open — the tournament that marked her emotional farewell to the sport she dominated for nearly two decades. At the time, she described her departure as “evolving away from tennis."
Rumours resurfaced in December when Williams quietly re-entered the tennis anti-doping testing pool, a mandatory step for any retired player considering a return.
While she quickly played down the move, her presence on the ITIA's list of retired players eligible to re-enter competition has kept the comeback chatter alive.
Speaking on The Today Show on Wednesday, Williams again struck a non-committal tone.

“I'm just having fun and enjoying my life right now," she said, stopping well short of confirming any plans but just as notably, not dismissing them either.
Under current regulations, any retired player must complete at least six months of clean testing before competing in a sanctioned event. Entry into the testing pool alone does not guarantee a return, but it is a prerequisite.
When pressed on why she had rejoined the programme, Williams remained evasive.
“Did I re-enter? I didn't know if I was out," she said. “Listen, I can't discuss this."
The timing is intriguing, particularly with sister Venus recently returning to the Australian Open via wildcard, alongside appearances in Auckland and Hobart.
Venus was knocked out in the first round in Melbourne, but has shown there is still room for the Williams name on tour.
Between them, the sisters won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals.
