All 10 teams led by Indian captains

The IPL's captaincy selections go beyond cricket, considering brand value and team dynamics. This process highlights players outside the current Indian T20 International plans. Shreyas Iyer's captaincy at Punjab Kings is gaining attention. Suryakumar Yadav's future leadership role is also being considered as he ages. Runs will eventually matter for Suryakumar, potentially opening a door for Shreyas.
The IPL is such a long tournament that most fans are not sure exactly what they’re looking for when the season begins. Teams that were on top wilt because they have not kept up with the times; others rise from the doldrums because the chemistry within the newly assembled squad is electrifying.
New stars are born as talent meets opportunity, while ageing warhorses get a tap on the shoulder from father time, reminding them that the body is no longer as willing as the mind.
The IPL also has a rhythm of its own. Each season carves out a distinct identity, like a drama series where every instalment is independent despite being deeply intertwined with what came before and what will unfold.
The 2026 season is the first in which all 10 teams are led by Indian captains. The appointment or anointing of a captain in an IPL team is very different from a national team set up. Here, owners think of a lot more than cricket. Who can be the face of a team that is an extension of their brand? Which leader will bring together a group that plays the kind of cricket they want to showcase? Which captain is one for the future? Who will talk to the fanbase most seamlessly?
In this process, without ever intending to, the IPL has acted as a bit of a sorting hat.
There are those who are not in the Indian scheme of things at all when it comes to T20 International cricket. Ajinkya Rahane (KKR) is in the past as far as the national selectors are considered, Ruturaj Gaekwad (CSK) may not have done enough when his tiny window at international cricket opened, Riyan Parag (RR) is not close enough to national colours.
Then there’s Rishabh Pant (LSG) whose pathway back is hard to see with Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan in harness as keeper batsmen. And Shubman Gill (GT) who went out of the team only to see them win a World Cup. What of Axar Patel (DC) who is vice-captain of the Indian set up and was still dropped from a World Cup match?
Rajat Patidar (RCB) is redefining himself in a winning team and carving a niche for himself while Hardik Pandya (MI) has his India captain playing under him.
The most interesting, and potentially unexpected, of all, is Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings). Injury has meant he has been in and out of Indian white-ball teams so much that his true value has not been showcased.
As a batsman who was roughed up by the short ball in international cricket, Shreyas went back to the drawing board and improved out of sight, to the point that bowlers were now bowling to a strength mistaking it for a weakness.
As a captain, Shreyas had taken the setbacks that life had sent his way and looked inward, not in a brooding, self-pitying manner, but with compassion and kindness.
Shreyas brings the air of someone who accepts that life has been difficult but remains grateful that he has the wherewithal to come out of the struggle on top. It is early days, but the success that Shreyas is presiding over at the Punjab Kings is already drawing attention.
A time will come, and it could arrive more suddenly than planned, when India look to the future and ask how long Suryakumar Yadav is the man to lead them. Soon after India won the T20 World Cup, Surya turned his sights on an Olympic gold in LA 2028. “Don’t forget there’s also a T20 World Cup that year,” he said, still basking in the afterglow of victory.
There’s no reason to believe yet that Surya will not still be in harness then. But, he will be 38 at the time, and the cushion for a string of low scores or lost form will diminish with age. The World Cup win has certainly bought him time, and he has capital with the BCCI for the manner in which he handled the no-handshake business with the Pakistan team.
Surya smiled and joked his way through a lot of public appearances but he was also taking some serious calls.
Surya’s returns with the bat have not been what he is used to but that did not matter when the team was thundering through a victorious campaign. At some point, though, the runs will matter. And when they do, Shreyas could well go from being on the fringes of the team to a central character.
