Alert! Himalayan tsunami could be the next big disaster; new study warns villages could be flooded instantly
The next big disaster may come from the Himalayas? Millions of people reportedly live in the shadow of thousands of glacial lakes that are swelling as glaciers melt. A recent study by IIT Roorkee researchers published in Scientific Reports, suggests that more than 31,000 of these lakes are growing across High Mountain Asia.
These aren't small ponds either, but they are massive, sometimes covering several square kilometres. Experts warn that if one of these natural dams suddenly bursts, it could unleash floods similar to the Kedarnath disaster of 2013. And with climate change accelerating glacier melt, it seems the risk is only rising.
According to the Scientific reports study titled “Automated satellite-based glacial lake inventory and change detection in High Mountain Asia”, Glacial lakes appear when ice retreats. The melting glacier leaves behind a depression that fills with water. Usually, loose rocks, ice, and mud hold it in place. When the water pressure builds too The thing is, these lakes are at high altitudes. So the water picks up speed as it falls. By the time it reaches villages, it's like a moving wall. Reports say the devastation can wipe out everything in its path including homes, roads, power plants.
Tracking all these lakes is tricky. Mountains are steep, remote, and often cloudy. The IIT Roorkee team reportedly used a mix of satellite images from NASA and ESA, radar sensors, and high-resolution terrain maps.
Globally, around 15 million people could face sudden glacial floods. But High Mountain Asia accounts for roughly 62 per cent of that number. In India, nearly 30 lakh people live under these unstable lakes. Warnings can come too late. Evacuation might be impossible in time. It seems the mountains are storing water and it might not take much of a rockslide or a storm to release it. The Himalayas might be beautiful, stunning and majestic. But these mountains are also dangerous. Rising glacial lakes show that even serene landscapes can hide deadly surprises.
