AIU Revisits Varsha Tekam Case; Upholds Three-Year Ban For Doping Test Evasion
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Monday revisited the case of Indian long-distance runner Varsha Tekam, emphasizing the critical responsibility of athletes to comply once they are notified for a doping test.
Varsha, who secured a third-place finish at the Pune Half Marathon in December 2024, was handed a three-year suspension on June 5 this year for evading an in-competition dope test. She had been provisionally suspended since May 26.
According to the AIU's official statement on X, the runner was selected for testing immediately after her race. She was formally notified by a Doping Control Officer (DCO) and kept under observation while waiting for the victory ceremony. However, she reportedly asked to fetch water and then disappeared into the crowd, never returning to complete the testing procedure.
“Despite repeated announcements and calls, she could not be located. No sample was ever collected," the AIU noted.
Officials also contacted the hotel where Varsha had stayed the previous night, but it was confirmed she had already checked out before they arrived.
The AIU determined that Varsha's actions constituted a violation of Rule 2.3 — “evading, refusing or failing to submit to sample collection." This is considered one of the most serious anti-doping offences and typically results in a four-year ban. However, because Varsha admitted to the violation early, her sanction was reduced to three years.
Her ban period began on May 20, 2025, the date of her provisional suspension. All of her results from December 15, 2024, onward have been disqualified.

The AIU underscored that the case serves as a reminder to all athletes: once notified, compliance with doping control is mandatory, and any attempt to evade testing is treated as a full-scale violation.
