PM Modi Hails India's 'Historic Performance' At World Para Athletics Championships: 'Will Inspire Many People'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised India's historic performance in the World Para Athletics Championships, stating that the country's best-ever showing in the event will serve as motivation for young athletes.
India secured a record 22 medals, comprising six gold, nine silver, and seven bronze, surpassing their previous best of 17 at the 2024 edition in Kobe, Japan.
“A historic performance by our para-athletes! This year's World Para-Athletics Championships have been very special. The Indian contingent had its best-ever performance, winning 22 medals, including 6 Gold Medals. Congrats to our athletes," wrote Modi on ‘X' while posting an image of all the country's medal winners.
“Their success will inspire many people. I am proud of each member of our contingent and wish them the very best for their future endeavours."
This was the first time India hosted the major para athletics event, which saw more than 2,200 participants from over 100 nations competing in 186 medal events.
“Hosting the tournament in Delhi has also been an honour for India. Gratitude to athletes and support staff from almost 100 nations who were a part of the tournament," Modi added.

The improvement in the performance of Indian para athletes clearly reflects the government's support for them. At WPAC 2025, 15 athletes from the government's Target Olympic Podium Scheme and one from the Khelo India programme finished among the medal winners. A total of 23 TOPS group athletes and 22 Khelo India athletes competed at WPAC 2025.

The 12th edition of the World Para Athletics Championships featured 2,000 athletes from 104 nations, competing in 186 events. India's team included 73 members, with 54 men and 19 women. During the nine days of intense competition on the newly laid Mondo track at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, 35 world records and 104 championship records were set. These 35 world records match the total from Paris 2023 and are 14 more than last year's event in Kobe, Japan. A total of 44 nations won at least one gold medal, and 63 countries went home with at least one medal.
