Air India opens Maharaja Points on Air India Express flights; what it means for passengers
Air India has rolled out an upgrade to its Maharaja Club loyalty programme, allowing members to earn and redeem Maharaja Points on Air India Express flights covering more than 55 destinations across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Asia. The move broadens the scope of the airline group’s rewards ecosystem. The latest development will make Maharaja Points more useful for frequent flyers by integrating the growing Air India Express network into the loyalty structure. Members can now accumulate points and Tier Points on eligible Air India Express bookings made through the airline’s official websites, mobile apps, and selected travel agents.
With the integration now live, Maharaja Club users can add their membership ID while booking Air India Express tickets and begin collecting Maharaja Points immediately. These flights will also contribute toward tier upgrades, helping members move faster through the programme’s status levels.
The airline clarified that eligible Air India Express journeys will count toward both Tier Points accumulation and minimum flight requirements needed for status progression. However, retrospective claims for past Air India Express flights are not available during the current phase of implementation.
Passengers booking special fares for students, senior citizens, and armed forces personnel will also qualify for Maharaja Points accrual. Reward calculations will be based on the base fare and fuel surcharge.
Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer, Air India, and Chairman, Air India Express, said: “Our focus is on continually expanding Maharaja Club in a way that ensures our loyal customers’ travel experiences across destinations contribute meaningfully to their relationship with the Air India group. The growing scale of the Air India Express network makes the introduction of accruals and redemptions on these flights both timely and important, addressing a long-standing expectation of our frequent flyers. It also reflects our aim to build Maharaja Points into a valuable currency over time.”
Different Reward Rates
The reward structure differs depending on where the booking is made. Members booking directly through the Air India Express website or app can earn higher Maharaja Points compared to bookings made through online travel agencies and traditional agents.
Under the structure, Red tier members can earn 8 points per INR 100 spent through official channels, while Platinum members can earn up to 12 points. Bookings made through third-party channels offer slightly lower accrual rates.
The airline also stated that Maharaja Club IDs can currently only be added or modified during the booking process online. Airport counters and contact centres do not yet support membership ID updates.
Redemption Starts From 1,500 Maharaja Points
Air India has also opened redemption options for select Air India Express-operated flights carrying Air India’s AI designator code under the codeshare arrangement between the two carriers.
Travellers searching for flights on the Air India website or mobile app can redeem Maharaja Points on these eligible flights alongside standard Air India services. Redemption prices begin at 1,500 Maharaja Points on select domestic routes such as Bengaluru-Chennai and Dimapur-Guwahati.
Other sample redemption routes include Bengaluru-Goa and Mumbai-Goa at 2,500 points, Delhi-Bengaluru at 7,000 points, and international sectors such as Amritsar-Dubai, Mumbai-Abu Dhabi, Kochi-Bahrain, and Bengaluru-Bangkok starting at 12,000 points.
Air India added that future phases of the integration will introduce additional privileges for Maharaja Club members flying Air India Express. These include priority check-in, priority boarding, seat selection benefits, Fly Prior services, and flexibility through cancellation and rescheduling fee waivers on eligible flights.
