Air India rolls out cheaper reward flights and more benefits for Maharaja Club members
Air India has rolled out cheaper reward flights and a wide set of new benefits for Maharaja Club members, with the changes effective from April 1, 2026. The airline said the update will improve the value of points, increase flexibility for bookings, and make it easier for members to upgrade tiers and use benefits.
The changes are based on feedback collected over more than a year. Air India said it used this input to align the programme with current travel patterns.
Air India has reduced Maharaja Points required for award flights and cabin upgrades across at least 90% of its network. Domestic award flights now start from 1,500 points, while cabin upgrades begin at 4,000 points.
For international travel, redemption levels have been standardised:
The airline said economy class redemption fares have reduced by about 30% on average across 80% of domestic routes and 75% of international routes. Business class fares have reduced by about 15% on domestic routes and about 25% on select international routes. Premium economy fares have also seen reductions across some routes.
“Our Maharaja Club members are at the heart of Air India’s ongoing transformation. These enhancements are designed to ensure that every Maharaja Point they earn carries more meaning, more flexibility, and more possibility. They reflect months of listening to our most frequent flyers, who were candid about what worked well and where the programme needed to evolve. We’ve taken that feedback seriously and made changes that matter most to them, ensuring that Maharaja Club remains relevant, rewarding, and future-ready,” Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer, Air India, said.

Air India said while most routes have seen reductions, a small number have no change or a marginal increase.
“By lowering and standardising redemption levels across the network, we’re ensuring that Maharaja Points deliver far greater value than before,”Aggarwal said.
Air India has introduced a tier-based structure:
Within these timelines, no fee will be charged and points will be fully returned. Outside these windows, a 25% fee will apply. No-show bookings will continue to have no refund.
The airline said cancellations of upgrades booked using points will now see points refunded.
The spend-based criteria remain unchanged. Flights taken over the past 365 days will be reassessed.
Aggarwal said, “We recognise that many of our loyal customers may have found progressing through tiers to be harder than it should be, especially those flying frequently on domestic or short-haul international routes. By easing the flight count thresholds, our valued members now have a more achievable path to the privileges they’ve earned.”
Air India will extend airport privileges to one companion travelling with Platinum or Gold members on the same booking. These include priority check-in, boarding, baggage handling, and lounge access.
Maharaja Points will now be credited within two hours of a flight or earlier, including flights with Star Alliance partners.
Air India said the latest changes build on the redesign of the Maharaja Club in 2024, when it shifted to a spend-based system. The programme now has over 10 million members globally and continues to expand partnerships across banking, retail, hospitality, travel, and lifestyle sectors, allowing members more options to earn and redeem points.
