After Federal Agents Kill 2 Citizens, Trump Says He, Minnesota Gov On 'Similar Wavelength'
US President Donald Trump on Monday said that he and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz are on a “similar wavelength" following a call about the escalating crisis in Minneapolis after a second US citizen was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Trump shared the update on his social media platform Social Truth, writing that Governor Walz had “called me with the request to work together with respect to Minnesota."
“It was a very good call, and we, actually, seemed to be on a similar wavelength. I told Governor Walz that I would have Tom Homan call him… The Governor, very respectfully, understood that, and I will be speaking to him in the near future. He was happy that Tom Homan was going to Minnesota, and so am I!," he added.
“We have had such tremendous SUCCESS in Washington, D.C., Memphis, Tennessee, and New Orleans, Louisiana, and virtually every other place that we have “touched" and, even in Minnesota, Crime is way down, but both Governor Walz and I want to make it better!," Trump concluded.
The US President's remarks come as he has dispatched Tom Homan, his top border security official, to Minnesota to lead the federal response. Homan, a former acting director of ICE, will report directly to Trump.
The move also comes after protests erupted over the deaths of two US citizens in Minneapolis during immigration enforcement operations.
Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot by ICE agents on January 7 during a protest against the administration's militarised raids. Again on January 24, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, also 37, an ICU nurse, was killed at point-blank range after being restrained by agents. Both deaths have sparked rallies in Minneapolis, New York, and other major cities.
Trump has defended the actions of ICE, suggesting Pretti may have been armed to shoot at police, despite the nurse being licensed to carry a firearm and already disarmed when shot.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison called the president's claims “flat-out insane."
US Federal authorities are now facing legal challenges over the deployment of heavily armed, masked officers in Minnesota, with a federal judge hearing arguments on whether the operation violates the state's sovereignty.
Meanwhile, Congressional Democrats are threatening to block federal funding unless immigration enforcement is reformed.
Additionally, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt insisted that Homan's mission would focus on arresting “criminal illegal aliens" rather than investigating Pretti's death.
